Biotechnology & Food Engineering by MCI More Information www.mci.edu

The 21st century calls for engineers with an interdisciplinary training and problem-solving competence in the fields of health, resources, ecology, nutrition, energy etc. Biotechnology, for example, constitutes one of the key disciplines of the 21st century, with enormous potential for growth and professional development. On the one hand that is due to progress made in biomedical research, leading

to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and on the other hand the chemical and pharmaceutical industry is showing a growing interest in biotechnological
processes to reduce the environmental footprint and increase the efficiency of the methods employed. The bachelor program in Biotechnology is designed to communicate the knowledge, methodological skills and problem-solving competence needed to tackle a very wide range of scientific and engineering problems. With its commitment to bridge-building between the academic and the business worlds, Management Center Innsbruck also provides essential teaching in the increasingly important horizontal disciplines of law and economics, and the skills needed for today’s labor market. First-class faculty from the worlds of science, engineering and business, a strong industry orientation, the limited number of places and outstanding tutoring in line the MCI motto “Mentoring the Motivated” guarantee excellent conditions for study with attractive prospects for the future. As a technical university program positioned at the interface with business and management, the bachelor program in Biotechnology satisfies the highest international standards.

🧪🔬 Praktikum deines Lebens 2026 🔬🧪

Join us for our Research Presentation by Dr. Matthias Ferdig & Colleagues on Monday from 10:45 - 12:15pm.
Location: MCI IV, exact room will be shown on screens.

Abstract:
Penicillins have revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections and continue to constitute a cornerstone of healthcare systems worldwide. To ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of these life saving medicines, ongoing development efforts remain essential. These efforts encompass both the optimization of existing manufacturing processes and the exploration of alternative production approaches. Key priorities in this context are the enhancement of product quality and the improvement of economic efficiency.
Recent development activities are illustrated by two representative projects: the synthesis of benzylpenicillin and the sterile formulation of piperacillin/tazobactam.

Join us on Monday, June 22nd from 13.00 - 14:30 for a Guest Lecture by Dr. Michael Richter!
Location: MCI IV, for room please see the Plasma TVs.

About the Presenter:
Dr Michael Richter is a chemist and has been conducting research at the Straubing branch of the Fraunhofer IGB (Germany) since June 2015. Here he initially worked on developments in the fields of applied biocatalysis and biobased materials. In 2019, he took over as head of the Bioinspired Chemistry department, a highly interdisciplinary research group dedicated to innovative developments in the field of sustainable chemistry in a holistic manner, using nature as a source of ideas. From 2026 on he is deputy head of the division Innovative Synthesis and head of the group Future Materials.

Abstract:
Today the use of renewable resources and the utilization of nature’s chemistry is in the focus of multiple research and development approaches that follow the principles of sustainable chemistry. In this context, many fields such as organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, biosynthesis and biocatalysis are relevant for the interdisciplinary tasks.
The talk will cover representative research highlights carried out at Fraunhofer IGB by using bioinspired and biomimetic chemistry strategies involving
i) the synthesis of terpene-based polyamides,
ii) the exploitation of biosynthetic modules for diversity-oriented synthesis
iii) the development of biohybrid systems for electrobiocatalytic CO2 fixation.
According to this, bioinspired chemistry is a complementary response to the technical requirements of modern sustainable chemistry. Solutions can be identified and be developed through an adaptive matrix approach. The talk shall stimulate discussion of how to use nature's toolbox, in order to combine biobased chemistry with established technologies for future markets.

I had the great opportunity to spend my exchange semester in Uppsala, Sweden. It was an absolutely amazing and unique experience. I made lots of friends and got to enjoy Swedish culture (and of course, a lot of swedish fika 🍰).

MCI Creativity Award x Master of Biotechnology 🧬✨

Our Master of Biotechnology students took part in this year’s MCI Creativity Award — an annual idea competition open to all MCI students, regardless of their field of study. The competition gives students the opportunity to present innovative and promising business and product ideas to an independent jury.

We are especially proud that 4 (!) teams from our Master of Biotechnology program reached the finals this year. A special congratulations to Moritz, Hannes, Saskia, Nele & Thomas for securing 5th place with their innovative idea! 👏
