The Death Stack: The Aesthetics and Imaginaries of Next Gen Warfare

This lecture explores how the military and defence sector constructs immersive aesthetic and sensorial worlds through arms fairs, speculative design, technical manuals, and strategic visualizations, producing a distinct cosmology of control, futurity, and threat.

By situating military and defence aesthetics within broader cultural and artistic practices, the session invites students to critically engage with the blurred boundaries between simulation, spectacle, and real-world next-gen violence.

Zsuzsanna Dominika Ihar is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science’s Department of Knowledge Systems and Collective Life. Zsuzsanna received her PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge, and has previously held fellowships at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC) in Munich and the Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM).

Cross-Disciplinary Strategies Studio

The Palais des Beaux Arts Wien functions as a mobile place of remembrance and projection for what was lost during National Socialism. Its exhibitions unfold across multiple times and places: on sidewalks, in archives, through tours, online, and elsewhere.
Originally built in 1908 as the home of Atelier Bachwitz, a publisher of fashion and lifestyle magazines, the building was Aryanized in 1938. The family was displaced, members were lost to the Holocaust, and the institution’s activities were interrupted.

This talk with Seth Weiner considers how the Palais continues today: by reattaching lost narratives, extending historically interrupted activities, and finding ways of continuing without erasing what came before.

Seth Weiner is an artist, teacher, and Collection Custodian for the Palais des Beaux Arts Wien, where he served as Artistic Director from 2019-2025.

Hope4Hope brings together MA students from Cross-Disciplinary Strategies in a collective exploration of what hope can still be: a force, a fiction, a method, or a form of resistance.

Through artistic, scientific, and technological approaches, the exhibition becomes a fragmented map where hope appears simultaneously as emotion, poison, and possibility.

What if an artwork could grow, age, and break down? 🌿

During our tour of METABOLICA with Thomas Feuerstein, we watched algae become fatty acids, bacteria turn those acids into bioplastic, and sculptures that slowly grow to be decomposed again.

What stayed with us most wasn’t just the machines or the materials, but the way Feuerstein talks about metabolism as storytelling. Each step felt like a meeting point of different fields: algae growing in HYDRA, bacteria working in bioreactors, PHB sculptures forming through 3D printing.

For us as students, it was inspiring to see how art can connect science, imagination, and material processes, showing what cross-disciplinary thinking can make possible.
