Here’s a glimpse into the making of Andrea Ferrero’s site-specific installation “It portends something awful for us” (2026), created on site at Kunstraum Niederoesterreich. ⛲️

In our exhibition “Attitude Era”, we trace the connections between spectacle, power, and manipulation. For this, the artist Andrea Ferrero has gone back to the Middle Ages. For “Attitude Era”, Ferrero has recreated three gargoyles from the façade of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in precise detail. The material comes with a sweet twist: these sacred specters are not cast in stone, but in chocolate. Monsters made to melt. ✨ In her artistic practice, Ferrero examines the continuities and transformations of ideologies across time and space.

And you can, of course, see the result on site at Kunstraum Niederoesterreich until Sat, 25.07.2026 (and maybe even taste it). 🧡

As the first exhibition of the year, “She, Who Dwells in the Shadows” unfolded over the past weeks, offering deep insights into suppressed memories, oral histories, and alternative forms of knowledge.
The group exhibition conceived by guest curator Kinnari Saraiya approached darkness not as something to illuminate, but as a space for experience, complexity, and transformation. ✨
 
“We know that in the present moment, darkness is not just metaphorical. (...) This condition is part of the shadowed atmosphere in which this exhibition exists – not only as catastrophe, but as a space where stories continue to move, where memory survives, and where other futures can still be imagined”, as Kinnari Saraiya said in her opening speech.
 
As the exhibition comes to an end, we would like to warmly thank everyone who visited, engaged, and made this exhibition such a meaningful experience over the past months. With our new guided tour series “Through the lens of…”, we invited experts to open up the exhibitions from their own distinctive perspectives. To be continued. 👀

Wie entsteht eigentlich eine Ausstellung? Und wie sieht die Arbeit im Kunstraum aus? 🔨💡

Das hat unser Vermittlungsteam heute im Rahmen des Wiener Töchtertags anhand einer Mini-Version unseres Ausstellungsraums vorgestellt: Wir haben gemeinsam Kunstwerke produziert und installiert, überlegt, was die Besucher*innen brauchen, wie man Kunst kommuniziert und am Ende natürlich eine Eröffnung gefeiert! Sieht fab aus, oder? 🥂💕

Wir bieten ein breites Spektrum an Workshops für Erwachsene und Jugendliche, Schulklassen und gemeinnützige Vereine an. Die Workshops werden von unserem Vermittlungsteam oder eingeladenen Künstler*innen angeleitet. Unser Ziel dabei ist es, Kunst über verschiedene Zugänge erfahrbar zu machen. Die Teilnahme an all unseren Workshops ist kostenlos.

Ziel des Wiener Töchtertags ist es, Schüler*innen Berufe aus den Bereichen Technik/Digitalisierung, Handwerk und Naturwissenschaften zu zeigen und damit ihr Spektrum bei der Karrierewahl zu erweitern. Der Wiener Töchtertag ist eine Initiative der Vizebürgermeisterin und Frauenstadträtin Kathrin Gaál und des Frauenservice Wien in Kooperation mit der Bildungsdirektion für Wien und der Wirtschaftskammer Wien.

Kinnari Saraiya (b. 1998 in Bombay) is a curator and artist based in London whose work centers on decolonial, feminist, and transmedia storytelling. Drawing on ancient sensorial practices and embodied knowledge, she approaches curation as a form of worldbuilding: film, installation, and virtual environments open pathways to hybrid cosmologies and reconstructed traditions. She has curated exhibitions and commissions for Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, arebyte Digital Art Centre, and Frieze Art Fair and was awarded the Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curatorial Fellowship in 2021. Kinnari currently holds the position of curator at Somerset House, London.

What does it mean to “understand” art? How does one “connect” with artworks? And is it possible to make such a connection in ways other than through words?

As part of the experimental mediation series “Body Talks”, we offer the opportunity to experience art not only with the mind, but in creative ways. 🌟

“Body Talks” was launched in 2023 at Kunstraum Niederoesterreich and developed in close collaboration with dancer and art mediator Daliah Touré 🧡

Each workshop is specifically tailored to the content of the current Kunstraum exhibitions. Participation is free of charge and requires no prior experience. If you are interested in a “Body Talks” workshop or have any questions regarding our mediation program, you can always reach out to us. 💌

How do you conjure a past for which there is no evidence, one that only exists as a gap?

The artist Soumya Sankar Bose explores this question in his installation “A Discreet Exit Through Darkness” (2020–2024), featured in our current exhibition “She, Who Dwells in the Shadows” curatedy by Kinnari Saraiya

As a child, Bose’s mother mysteriously disappeared one day. When she was found three years later, she couldn’t remember what had happened to her. By combining various media and technologies (including VR glasses), “A Discreet Exit Through Darkness” does not aim to bridge this gap in memory, but rather to make the darkness etched into Bose’s mother’s mind tangible.

Soumya Sankar Bose lives and works in Kolkata. His artistic practice combines photography, film, and archival research to uncover new perspectives on the complex terrains of memory, desire, vulnerability, and identity.

Am Mi, 22.04.2026 um 18:30 Uhr führt die Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftlerin Alexandra Ganser durch die Ausstellung „She, Who Dwells in the Shadows“ und eröffnet – inspiriert von ihrer Forschung zu nordamerikanischen Literaturen, Kulturen und Mobilität – ihren ganz persönlichen Blick auf die künstlerischen Arbeiten. 💭

In der Reihe Through the lens of… laden wir Expert*innen aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen ein, ihre Sicht auf die gezeigten Arbeiten zu teilen.

Neugierig, was eine Biologin in der Ausstellung entdeckt? 🔎

Am Mi, 08.04.2026 um 18:30 Uhr führt die Molekularbiologin und Tänzerin Asmita Banerjee durch unsere aktuelle Ausstellung „She, Who Dwells in the Shadows“. Sie gibt uns dabei einen persönlichen Blick auf die präsentierten Werke, basierend auf ihrem Hintergrund in biomedizinischer Forschung und ihrer Praxis im südindischen Tanz Bharatanāṭyam.

Die von Kinnari Saraiya kuratierte Gruppenausstellung "She, Who Dwells in the Shadows" widmet sich den Potenzialen des Dunklen und Obskuren. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Geschichten und Wissensformen, die außerhalb offizieller Archive existieren und durch Praktiken des Erzählens, der Verkörperung und kosmologischer Vorstellungskraft weitergegeben werden.

Mit „Through the lens of…“ laden wir ein, Ausstellungen aus der Perspektive ganz unterschiedlicher Disziplinen und Erfahrungshintergründe zu erleben.

It’s been 10 days since Stina Fors , winner of the H13 Prize 2025, brought her marathon performance “Answer me, Pythia” to a close. What does it mean to step into the role of the ancient Oracle of Delphi almost daily and speak about the future? Fors discussed this and other questions with Kunstraum’s artistic director Frederike Sperling in the context of H13 Artist Talks 2025. Genau 10 Tage ist es her, dass die H13-Preisträgerin 2025 Stina Fors ihre Marathon-Performance „Answer me, Pythia“ zu Ende gebracht hat. Was es bedeutet, zwei Wochen lang beinah täglich in die Rolle der sagenumwobenen Pythia, der weissagenden Hohepriesterin im antiken Orakel von Delphi, zu schlüpfen? Über diese und andere Fragen hat sich Fors mit der künstlerischen Leiterin des Kunstraums Frederike Sperling im Rahmen des H13 Artist Talks 2025 unterhalten.
