Learning Country: Wisdom from Aboriginal Seasonal Calendars 🌿

📅 September | Yawuru Country (Broome) Wirlburu – Warming Season The transition from the cool season to the hot season begins. Westerly winds start to blow, bringing warmer days and nights. While it remains dry, clouds begin to gather on the horizon and dust storms may still occur.

📅 September | Miriwoong Country (Kununurra) Barndenyirriny – Hot Weather September marks the beginning of the build-up, characterised by:
☀️ Clear skies
🌬️ North winds
🌡️ Rising temperatures

Learning from Aboriginal seasonal calendars helps us recognise and respect the deep knowledge of Country and the communities who have cared for it for generations. By paying attention to these seasonal indicators, we gain a richer understanding of the environment and our connection to place.

🍃 What signs of seasonal change are you noticing around you?

Colours of Courage 💜

Wear It Purple Day was a wonderful opportunity for our staff across our campuses to stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+SB young people.

Through a simple act of wearing purple, we reinforced an important message: you are valued, you are supported, and you belong.

Thank you to everyone who got involved and helped create a visible show of inclusion, respect, and belonging throughout NR TAFE.

Learning can change lives.

As we celebrate Adult Learners Week 2026 (1-8 September), we're reminded that learning isn't just about qualifications. It's about confidence, connection, opportunity and growth.

The theme "Follow Your Compass: Learning for Life" reflects the many pathways adults take when they decide to strengthen their literacy, numeracy or digital skills. Every new skill learned can lead to greater independence, participation and possibilities.

This week, we celebrate the achievements of adult learners and encourage anyone considering their next step to remember: it's never too late to start.

🧭 Follow your compass. Invest in yourself. Learn for life.

Success in the Skies at Bidyadanga! 🚁

Sixteen Ranger trainees from the Yawuru, Karajarri and Gooniyandi Ranger groups recently completed three days of hands-on drone training in Bidyadanga Remote Community.

The training, led by Gary Lienert and supported by Ron Cox, provided participants with practical skills that will enhance land and sea management activities across the Kimberley.

Beyond the technical learning, the course showcased the strength of collaboration, with Rangers supporting each other every step of the way. The positive energy, teamwork and shared commitment to learning made the training a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Well done to all participants for embracing this opportunity and investing in skills that will benefit Country and community for years to come. 🌿

Colours of Courage 💜

This Wear It Purple Day, we're celebrating the courage that exists in our communities every day.

Whether it's speaking up, creating change, living authentically, coming out, supporting a friend, or simply choosing hope, courage comes in many colours and many forms.

The Colours of Courage remind us that every identity, experience and story matters. Together, our differences make our communities stronger, brighter and more inclusive.

Join us in wearing purple and showing LGBTQIA+SB young people that they are valued, supported and belong.

From a passion for food to a future in hospitality. 👨‍🍳

As part of our National Skills Week series, meet Rafa, a cookery student from North Regional TAFE.

Inspired by the creativity of combining flavours, aromas and textures, Rafa is building the skills and confidence needed for a career as a chef.

Along the way, he's been guided by mentors including his TAFE lecturer, head chef, chef de partie and high school Food Technology teacher, who have helped him develop patience, teamwork and confidence in the kitchen.

One of the biggest lessons he's learned at TAFE came through something as simple as kneading dough.

"My lecturer taught me that good food takes time and that rushing the process can affect the final result. It taught me to slow down, pay attention to the small details and trust the process."

For Rafa, becoming a chef is about more than learning recipes. It's about building the skills, patience and mindset needed to succeed. ✨
