Last night, the Annual Kirby Lecture in International Law—Disarmament and World Order—offered a timely and powerful reflection on how power is exercised within global institutions.

Hosted by the ANU Law School Centre for International and Public Law (CIPL), the event started with remarks from Associate Professor Imogen Saunders, Director of CIPL, setting the stage for a rigorous discussion.

We then heard from Professor Devika Hovell (The London School of Economics and Political Science - LSE), who sits comfortably among the leading figures in international law.

Her central argument was both confronting and compelling: disarmament is best understood not as moral ornament or strategic pretext, but as a constitutional principle of world order.

The constitutional task, Professor Hovell argued, is not merely to regulate the bomb more carefully, but to refuse both the monstrous logic of survival without limit and the god-like logic of custodianship without equality.

“It is to insist that the state is not the sole source of political value, that humanity is not merely collateral to sovereignty, and that no legal order worthy of the name can be built constitutionally on a balance of terror,” says Professor Hovell.

Thanks to Professor Anthony Connolly for his thoughtful closing remarks and to all who attended and contributed to such an important conversation.

The Women leaders in law event on 23 April was an inspiring reminder of what it takes for a woman to build a meaningful and respected career at the highest levels of the judiciary.

Hosted by ANU Law School Centre for International and Public Law (CIPL) Director Associate Professor Imogen Saunders, the event brought together two female Chief Justices, The Right Honourable Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, first female Chief Justice of Malaysia, and the ACT's own Honourable Chief Justice, Lucy McCallum.

The Chief Justices spoke eloquently and powerfully about the importance of integrity and independence in the legal profession and judiciary, and about the role that courage plays in challenges and opportunities for women in the profession.

CIPL thanks Associate Professor Heather Roberts for moderating the event.

ANU Law School alumni, Justice Louise Taylor, has been appointed as Chief Magistrate of the ACT Magistrates Court.

She is a proud Kamilaroi woman and is the first Aboriginal woman in Australia to be appointed to a superior court. She was appointed as a Magistrate in 2018 and a Resident Judge of the Supreme Court in 2023.

She said, “I am delighted to accept the opportunity to serve as Chief Magistrate of the ACT Magistrates Court whilst retaining my commission as a judge of the ACT Supreme Court. The Magistrates Court is the people’s court, the place where many Canberrans experience the justice system.”
