Meet the Relationship Team (RT) — a close-knit group of 4 students responsible for raising awareness of the ANU Student Managed Fund (SMF) and building meaningful connections with the University and beyond.

Our team manages the Fund's branding and communications across social media, coordinates external engagement initiatives, and strengthens relationships with alumni, and industry professionals.

We support outreach by organising guest speaker sessions, promoting events, and engaging directly with the student community to boost awareness of the Fund's activities and opportunities. We work closely with other SMF teams and stakeholders to keep our messaging consistent and uphold the Fund's strong reputation within the ANU community.

While relationship management is at our core, we also love getting creative — designing campaigns, producing engaging content, and finding new ways to connect with students and stakeholders. Through this work, RT plays a vital role in building the Fund's profile and impact.

Meet the Risk and Compliance (R&C) Team:

The Risk & Compliance (R&C) team are a group of hardworking and analytical students responsible for monitoring and reporting on the Fund’s portfolio performance, assessing portfolio risks, and maintaining and updating the Portfolio Attribution (PA) Model. The team also ensures investments align with the SMF’s Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) policy, which extends from the broader ANU SRI framework with additional Fund-specific constraints. R&C collaborates with the AAE and AA teams to ensure ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) considerations are integrated into investment decisions.

Additionally, R&C is responsible for the Fund’s Behaviour Bias Risk Management Framework and regularly undertakes red-teaming to identify and mitigate risks stemming from behavioural bias. The team also leads the Breach Management process, where potential SRI policy violations are identified, investigated, and escalated to the Fund Convenor and CIO for resolution.

The Asset Allocation (AA) team is a group of driven and analytical students responsible for managing approximately 55% of the ANU Student Managed Fund's portfolio. Working across equities, fixed income and cash, the team determines the optimal asset mix to maximise long-term risk returns trade off.

The AA team plays a pivotal role in positioning the SMF for sustainable performance across market cycles, using rigorous macroeconomic analysis and scenario forecasting to keep the portfolio well-diversified and resilient.

Meet the Active Australian Equities (AAE) Team:

The AAE team manages approximately 45% of the ANU Student Managed Fund, researching ASX 200 companies to identify high-conviction investment opportunities. Analysts combine fundamental research, financial modelling and market analysis to assess current holdings and pitch new investment ideas to the Investment Advisory Committee. Through this process, students gain practical experience applying finance theory to real-world investment decisions while contributing to the Fund’s long-term objectives.

The Chief Investment Officer sits at the head of the student team, providing leadership and overseeing cross-team collaboration to ensure the smooth operation of the whole Fund. Acting as the last checkpoint before recommendations reach the Convenors for feedback and the Investment Advisory Committee for endorsement, the CIO ensures every proposal has been rigorously vetted and reflects the Fund's broader strategy and objectives. As part of these internal responsibilities, the CIO also works alongside Convenors to shape the agenda for team meetings, while representing the SMF to external parties — such as engaging with industry practitioners and marketing events.

The role extends well beyond leading the student team: the CIO oversees day-to-day Fund operations and acts as the main point of contact between the student team and Course Convenors.

It's a role that demands equal parts leadership, judgement, and organisation. By tying together the efforts of every sub-team, the CIO keeps the Fund running smoothly, drives it toward its goals, and upholds the standard of professionalism the SMF is known for.

We are excited to share the latest portfolio snapshot from the ANU Student Managed Fund (SMF).

As of 23 July 2026, the Fund's total Assets Under Management (AUM) stood at $911,378.64, with an annualised return of +8.42% since inception.

Our portfolio is managed across two teams:

Wondering what the ANU Student Managed Fund is?

Students in the ANU SMF manage over $900,000 in assets, with annual distributions supporting an equity scholarship for students at the College of Business and Economics facing financial hardship.

The SMF offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the investment industry as part of a fully accredited ANU course. Mentored by two ANU Convenors, students gain insight into the day-to-day operations of a professionally managed fund, from conducting investment research to developing and presenting investment recommendations. Guided by ANU’s Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Policy, students’ recommendations are reviewed and endorsed by the Investment Advisory Committee (IAC), which includes leading industry practitioners.

The ANU SMF consists of four teams:

⭐️Asset Allocation (AA) Team
⭐️Risk and Compliance (R&C) Team
⭐️Relationship (RT) Team

The SMF is a year-long program, with students committing to two semesters, beginning as juniors in FINM3009/FINM6009, before progressing to senior roles in FINM3010/FINM6010 if they achieve a minimum grade of Credit in their first semester, taking responsibility for daily fund management and mentoring the next cohort.

The ANU Student Managed Fund presents the End-Semester Report for Semester 1, 2026.

As of 29 May 2026, the SMF delivered a -4.38% Year to date (YTD) return, falling short of its target of CPI + 4.5% by 8.23%, with assets under management standing at $895,653.

Amid volatile markets, the Asset Allocation portfolio added 1.53% to total portfolio performance relative to the reference portfolio, driven largely by the fund’s Emerging Markets exposure, which contributed 1.71% YTD . The team also completed its first revision of the Investment Process document since inception and reviewed the Fund’s developed market allocation.

Amid geopolitical risk, tariff uncertainty and higher-than-expected inflation, the Active Australian Equities (AAE) portfolio returned -15.35% YTD relative to the iShares Core S&P/ASX 200 (IOZ) benchmark, with security selection contributing-7.91% to total portfolio performance -. Underperformance was largely driven by CSL Limited (CSL) (-4.04%), Lendlease (LLC) (-3.86%) and Orora (ORA) (-3.86%), reflecting company-specific headwinds, partly offset by modest gains in Worley (WOR) (+0.38%) and Computershare (CPU) (+0.52%). Over the semester, the team presented two in-depth recommendations to the IAC, both of which were endorsed: a buy recommendation for Computershare (CPU), which was added to the portfolio, and a sell recommendation for Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC), with the position subsequently sold.
