Who Owns the City? is a project by Dr Jacqui Alexander and students from Monash University Architecture. It begins from a stark reality: Australia’s housing system has become a key driver of inequality. Soaring land values, the demolition of public housing, and the concentration of property in fewer hands are reshaping the social and spatial dynamics of cities. Against this backdrop, the project investigates a simple but urgent question: who owns the city?

Through countermapping practices and data sleuthing, students work with official records to construct a forensic picture of land ownership across inner Melbourne — where high amenity and escalating real estate values continue to displace marginalised communities. Through GIS mapping, it investigates landholdings that are partially insulated from speculative logics, and asks whether these sites could support new forms of subsidised and non-market housing.

What happens when AI moves beyond image generation and starts reshaping how buildings are actually delivered?

As part of Melbourne Design Week 2026, the Future Building Initiative team from Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA) and Monash Architecture is hosting a public forum exploring how AI-enabled workflows are beginning to transform the coordination, decision-making, and delivery of buildings across architecture, engineering, and construction.

AI Workflows for Future Building Delivery brings together voices from practice, digital innovation, and construction to discuss where these technologies are already changing workflows — and where existing systems, contracts, and delivery models are struggling to keep up.

The session will feature short provocations from invited panellists, followed by an open discussion examining:

- workflow transformation across design and delivery
- AI and industrialised construction
- productivity and decarbonisation
- the changing role of designers within increasingly automated systems

The discussion will conclude with networking and refreshments, providing an opportunity for continued conversation across industry, research, and practice.

Featuring contributors from leading practices and organisations across architecture, engineering, digital delivery, and construction. Stay tuned for for information on our industry guests next week!

Thursday 21 May
6.00–7.30pm

We were recently joined by François Decoster of l’AUC for “The Commons as Profit: Rethinking Urban Transformation in France.”

The lecture explored new approaches to urban transformation, focusing on housing, density, and the value of shared commons, and featured projects across Lyon, Paris, Brussels, and Pessac.

Hosted by Monash Department of Architecture, Monash Urban Lab, and Urban Design Forum.

Guest lectures like these offer valuable perspectives on the challenges shaping architecture and urban design today.

A big thank you to François for sharing his work and insights.

Have you visited the Melbourne Now exhibition at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia yet? Dr Timothy Moore , senior lecture here at Monash curated the ‘Civic Architecture’ installation. Open now until 20th August. Posted • Greater Melbourne has grown by one million people in the last decade. This has been matched by increased investment in new architecture projects to provide anchors in this wild urban growth - Melbourne's new civic centres. Designed by the city's leading architects and landscape architects they are a confident expression of a rapidly changing social, cultural and economic landscape. ARCHITECTURE OF CARE
Using an Auto-Ethnographic Design Approach to Rearticulate Practice.

By Anthony Clarke

Examination: 2:30pm Thursday 27 April

This research establishes a care-focused methodology for the rearticulation of architectural practice. Three active architectural projects provide a means for testing and reflecting on an innovative methodological approach which brings together design research and autoethnography as a means to explore the relationships between project, process, architect and user.

Supervised by Nigel Bertram, John Gardner, Laura Harper

Dwelling on the Platform:
Housing Access and Equity in the Digital Society

By Jacqui Alexander

Examination: TBA

Through a series of speculative and critical creative works, Dwelling on the Platform: Housing Access and Equity in the Digital Society investigates how cultural and economic changes brought about by digital platforms and on-demand technologies are impacting the physical and social fabric of cities, in particular the home – the most elementary unit of the city, and a site at the centre of these transformations.

Supervised by Nigel Bertram, Alex Brown, Ari Seligmann
