Dr Kate Gould, Monash alum and head of CyberAbility, asserts that scams are about emotion, “After a scam, people are often met with disbelief or ridicule,” she says. “They’re told: ‘How could you be so stupid?’ But it’s not about intelligence, it’s about emotion. Everyone has emotions, and scammers exploit them.”

Dr. Gould, an Associate Professor at Monash, works with her team to strengthen frontline responses for cyberscam victims and distribute free education materials nationwide, empowering people with disability to participate online.

Over more than a decade, CyberAbility has united clinicians, researchers and people with lived experience of acquired brain injuries to co-design therapy programs and learning resources that help vulnerable Australians stay safe online. Graduation ceremonies are full of tradition and nothing embodies that more profoundly than the Ceremonial Mace. You’ll probably recognise the ornamental club, but you’d be forgiven for not knowing what it is — or what it’s for. Enjoy this throwback from a past graduation, where Joe Kabalan, Director of External Engagement and Events, reveals what makes it so special.

What’s it made out of? It has a shaft of polished Australian black bean wood, and a head and a foot of cast and beaten silver. The orb of the head carries the University coat of arms and is supported by flames symbolising the light given to the world increasing knowledge.

What’s on the mace? At the foot are four oval panels each engraved with a device suggested by the donor as identifying General Sir John Monash.

Keep an eye out for it at the October graduation ceremonies.

Endometriosis affects up to one in seven Australian girls, women and individuals assigned female at birth by age 50. It has no known cure and it takes an average of eight years from the onset of symptoms to get a diagnosis. Last month, Australia's first national Endometriosis Management Plan was launched.

Project lead, Monash alumnus and Head of Monash University’s Department of General Practice, Professor Danielle Mazza, said the EMP was designed to ensure patients with persistent symptoms were not left waiting for the next step in their care, “We want patients to understand their condition, know what their options are and have a clear management plan they can return to and review with their GP, rather than feeling there is nowhere to turn.”

Lulu did not. She came through the out-of-home care system, working to provide for herself and her sister. Without an Achieving Potential Scholarship she simply could not have afforded to attend uni.
