We're proud to share that Professor Rebecca Collie from our Faculty of Education has been awarded $1,326,500.00 for her ARC Future Fellowship project:

Leveraging Social-Emotional Motivation to Enhance Adolescent Development.

Her project investigates social-emotional skills and wellbeing decline during adolescence, a trend that has worsened in recent years. New research shows that social-emotional motivation, defined as adolescents’ belief in their ability to shape their social-emotional experiences is a key driver of positive development.

The project aims to advance the understanding of social-emotional motivation and its protective role in supporting developmental outcomes in adolescence. This knowledge will be used to create evidence-based practice and policy insights tailored to schools and broader systems.

Congratulations to Rebecca Collie on this wonderful achievement! We look forward to seeing positive impact on social-emotional and academic development among young people across Australia.

What happens when the "manosphere" enters the classroom?

Monash University researcher Dr. Stephanie Wescott joined guest host Waleed Aly on ABC Melbourne Mornings to address a critical issue in Australian education: the rise of misogyny, sexual harassment, and boundary-testing directed at female teachers.

Dr. Wescott highlighted that creating safe school environments requires moving past short-term fixes and focusing on:

New research from Monash University and UNSW Sydney confirms it: early teacher support directly boosts Year 12 completion rates!

Co-led by Monash Education's Professor Rebecca Collie, the study analysed data from over 40,000 NSW students to uncover a clear link between early classroom support and finishing high school.

Key findings include:
🔹 Year 9s with strong support were 1.5x more likely to plan for Year 12 and uni.
🔹 80% of Year 10s planning to finish high school actually did.
🔹 Quality teaching, good management, and strong relationships drove retention.

As school retention rates trend upward, this study reinforces a vital lesson: strong teaching support in Years 9 and 10 is essential for getting students across the Year 12 finish line.
