The 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 provides financial assistance for two students enrolled in the Master of Marine Biology program to travel to and attend the annual Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA) conference.

Our awardees for 2025, 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗮 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 and 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮 𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗮-𝗕𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿 joined hundreds of marine scientists and knowledge holders at the conference in Canberra, centred around the theme ‘𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩.’

With a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary connections, including marine social science, Indigenous knowledge, policy and governance, the conference provided the opportunity to listen to leading researchers, share their own work and explore potential future collaborations.

Thank you to all who donated to the Elizabeth Pearce Marine Science Fund, and to AMSA for providing conference registration free of charge for our awardees.

New research by OI member 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗲 has revealed four distinct regions of unique biodiversity within Exmouth Gulf, which is also a globally significant stronghold for threatened sharks and rays.

Jessica spoke on ABC Pilbara Breakfast to share how the findings are helping inform conservation planning for the Exmouth Gulf Marine Park and contributed to the designation of Exmouth Gulf and Ningaloo Reef as an 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮 (ISRA).

In 2022, UWA Research and University of Tasmania researchers working with Wadandi cultural custodians Zac and Wayne Webb, used high tech remote undersea drones to explore the ocean floor off the coast of Augusta.

Their collaboration connected stunning underwater landscapes with ancient songlines describing campgrounds and rivers now hidden beneath the sea.
