SNAGS Students of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (SNAGS) is a Faculty Society at the University of Western Australia.

Students of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (SNAGS) is a Faculty Society at the University of Western Australia devoted to all students studying in the associated degrees of Earth and Environment, Agricultural and Resource Economics and, Animal and Plant Biology. As a Faculty Society we represent students in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences in matters of university education. We

also hold several events throughout the university year that allows students to socialise with their peers, and develop contact networks within the industry. As a group, we are looking to expand in the coming years, by developing a broader community within the university and industry, giving students greater opportunities to have a richer university experience, and find their desired career once graduating.

SNAGS would like to highly recommend one of the phenomenal lectures happening soon from the Institute of Agriculture;

'Can less be more? Rethinking nitrogen fertiliser use in Australian cereal cropping'
2026 Brian Carlin Memorial Lecture by Dr Alison Bentley

Thursday 18 March | 5:15–7:45pm (GMT+8)
📍 Bayliss Lecture Theatre G33, The University of Western Australia

SNAGS highly recommends attending this IOA event as Dr Alison Bentley, Deputy Director (Science) at CSIRO Agriculture and Food, delivers the 2026 Brian Carlin Memorial Lecture: “Can less be more? Rethinking nitrogen fertiliser use in Australian cereal cropping.”
Dr Bentley will explore innovative research aimed at reducing nitrogen inputs while maintaining productive and resilient wheat crops. Topics include novel field-based testing, new seed technologies, and the potential of Biological Nitrification Inhibition to reduce nitrogen loss and emissions in current farming systems.

Hosted by The UWA Institute of Agriculture, the Brian Carlin Memorial Lecture honours the legacy of Mr Brian Carlin, a pioneering agriculturalist whose work in set stocking transformed farming in Southwest Western Australia. Established following his passing in 1966, the memorial fund brings leading agricultural scientists to deliver a public lecture and engage with UWA, DAFWA, and local grower groups, connecting research with practical, real-world applications. 🎟️ Free to attend – register now on IOA Eventbrite page: https://lnkd.in/gsRb6Wsg

🌾New Honours Partnership Program🌾

About the program:

The WA Agricultural Research Collaboration(WAARC) and Grower Group Alliance (GGA) are teaming up to launch an innovative Honours Partnership Program in 2026.

This initiative will connect Honours students from Curtin University, Murdoch University and The University of Western Australia with WA grower groups to tackle real-world agricultural challenges.

Six Honours students will be paired with grower groups to co-design, conduct and deliver research projects that address industry priorities. This hands-on approach ensures students gain practical experience while growers benefit from tailored research solutions.

Timothy Porter, beloved ‘25 Ag social VP, is currently studying abroad in Indonesia 🇮🇩🌴✈️
When asked how it’s going, Tim responded,
“It’s been very good, the program is ran through ACICIS and they are very supportive throughout. It is an eye opening experience to say the least, as the culture is entirely different!“

Australian Consortium for “In-Country” Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) has an office on the UWA Crawley campus. UWA students get to pay their normal domestic fees when studying abroad. But Tim was also further sponsored by PT Sayuran Siap Saji.

“The way in which the farmers operate, especially with tighter margins and lower commodity prices it can be a real struggle for farms to stay afloat. Sayuran Siap Saji partners with farmers and assists in inputs costs, ensuring they are able to achieve high quality, continuous produce, for their clients as a food service provider”

Tim has been a pinnacle of SNAGS culture, given this is the same legend who brought you Dowerin Camp 2025🌾. However, clearly he misses SNAGS as much as we will miss him, stating
“I’m sick of eating food fried in palm oil and rice, so much rice. To top it off you can’t get a bloody beer anywhere!” 🍻😆
Nonetheless, enjoy the horticultural change to your normal broad-acre farming Tim! 🌱🌱

There are many opportunities to study abroad in Agriculture, and SNAGS aims to help get the word out about these opportunities more in 2026 ✈️
