UWA Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy has just been published in Nature! The article discusses the diversity of values for sustainability. Congratulations to Dr Ram Pandit for his ongoing collaborations and work in this space. A very interesting read that advocates for combinations of values-centred approaches in science and policy to enable transformative change for the sustainability of nature. UWA Research UWA School of Agriculture and Environment

Following a wide-ranging review of studies, reports and policies about nature’s multiple values, combinations of values-centred approaches are proposed to improve valuation of nature, address barriers to uptake in decision-making, and make transformative changes towards more ju...

UWA School of Agriculture and Environment researchers engage directly with farmers for Beeflinks research project

Beeflinks’ researchers from the Centre for Agriculture Economics and Development recently spent the day in WA's mid-west town of Dandaragan to meet with cattle farmers. The mid-west region is mainly a grain producing area, although 11% of the annual production value is generated from livestock (DP...

🌾🚜 Embracing technology for enhanced grain yields 🚜🌾

Broden Holland and his family are using precision farming techniques to optimise grain production on their farm between Young and Grenfell in southern New South Wales.

In 2016, Broden and his father Chris started using data from a protein monitor and grid soil sampling to guide their farming inputs.

They fitted a protein monitor to one of their harvesters to blend grain according to protein levels and began using two-hectare grid mapping of soil to check pH and phosphorus levels.

The results? Their paddocks now have a phosphorus level of 55 and a pH of 5.5. They're now aiming for a pH of 6.0 to improve faba bean production and nitrogen fixation.

Broden says there is a link between wheat grain protein and plant-available nitrogen.

"It shows how much nitrogen the plant has taken up".

Broden has also been using wheat grain protein maps to guide urea inputs since 2017. Initially, he used six to seven different rates of urea in most paddocks, but he has now simplified this to one or two rates where grain protein maps are less variable.

The impact on their grain yields has been significant. In favourable seasons, yields on one block have increased from an average of six to 7t/ha of wheat across six per cent of the area to six to 7t/ha of wheat across most of the area.

To further streamline their process, Broden now uses the N-Gauge app to create variable-rate urea maps, reducing the time required from three hours to just one hour.
