Well done Charlotte - some very timely work!

Today the Minister for Fisheries announced a range of strong measures to increase the sustainability of our WA demersal fish stocks.

Although these measures will have significant impacts for many people, they reflect a pressing need to recover WA’s iconic demersal species and are in line with the best science available.

𝗨𝗪𝗔 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 and UWA School of Biological Sciences researchers have been working with 𝗪𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 to investigate ways to find a balance between fishing and protection. They have published a new study demonstrating that setting aside areas from fishing in no-take zones combined with other appropriate fisheries management approaches could provide part of the solution.

Work is underway on the review and proposed expansion of Marmion Marine Park. The proposed expansion covers the area of ocean from Trigg Point to Two Rocks, and west to the limit of State waters.
Contribute your local knowledge by taking the survey to tell DBCA how you use and value this special coastal environment https://tinyurl.com/marmionvalues

Catching up with engaged local communities on the south coast 👍

ESPERANCE ENGAGED IN MARINE ENVIRONMENT 🐟🐟🐟

A researcher from the University of WA's Oceans Institute says the Esperance community turned out in big numbers at a recent public event on marine parks.

"We've got such an incredible unique environment here in the south coast, but looking around the world at the moment you can see some pretty intense marine heat waves, we're so lucky," Dr Tim Langlois said.

"It was one of the biggest and most lively public presentations I've ever done."

Dr Langlois said without a relationship with the local community, it would be impossible to conduct his research.

The University of Western Australia through an Our Marine Parks Grant from Parks Australia are using baited and non-baited drop cameras to reveal what is living in depths from 70m to over 400m with funding from the Australian Government through the Our Marine Parks Grant program.

This week we are celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage listing.

Ningaloo Marine Park (Commonwealth waters) makes up 40% of the world heritage area and although there has been a lot of research done in the shallow coral reef areas very little is known about the deeper parts of the Ningaloo (Nyinggulu) Coast.

The University of Western Australia through an Our Marine Parks Grant from Parks Australia are using baited and non-baited drop cameras to reveal what is living in depths from 70 m to over 400 m with some amazing results which we will continue to share.
