The colon: is a punctuation mark consisting of two equally sized dots centered on the same vertical line. A colon often precedes an explanation or a list. Wikipedia
A colon can be used to indicate that a list, quotation or summary is about to follow.
Example:
For this class you will need: pencils, paints, brushes and a canvas.

A colon can also be sued to separate an initial sentence or clause from a second clause, list, phrase or quotation that supports the
first in a particular way.
Example:
Learning to speak English is not easy: to begin with you must practise speaking English whenever you can.

What is a semicolon.
A semicolon is a punctuation mark that separates things . Most commonly semicolons are used to separate two main clauses that are closely related to each other but could stand on their own as sentences.

Example:
I have an early meeting tomorrow morning; I can't go out tonight.

The two clauses in that sentence are separated by a semicolon and could be sentences on their own if you put a period between them instead:

I have an early meeting tomorrow morning. I can't go out tonight.
