As a law and criminology student, and someone very passionate about striving for equality, women's rights, and access to justice in the law, the Founder of the It’s On All Of Us Project, Kara Batchelor, is one of the Millennium Fellows for 2021.

By participating in the Millennium Fellowship, Kara intends to use her skills of empathy, enthusiasm, and leadership to spread awareness about violence within our community, and the strategies we can all use to prevent it. As an aspiring lawyer, Kara has an advanced understanding of domestic violence, particularly as she has undertaken extensive work experience in the family law field. However, she also has experience working and conducting matters in a team by working for Griffith in a number of roles and within the Honours College as a part of initiatives - which she intends to use in progressing her project.

The Hidden Initiative, targeting Sustainable Development Goal 10 to Reduce Inequalities, strives to spread awareness and understanding for those living with disabilities and mental and/or physical health conditions that aren’t apparent to the naked eye.

By stimulating discussion and increasing the visibility of related support services, The Hidden Initiative aspires to minimise the stigma and feeling of shame felt by those with hidden conditions.

Having launched as a Millennium Fellowship project in 2020, The Hidden Initiative has now successfully raised $2,000+ on behalf of local support organisations, including the Literacy Foundation for Children and the Stepping Stone Clubhouse, and has developed a global community of like-minded people who are passionate in breaking down social barriers and promoting positive health outcomes through the pillars of awareness, empathy and kindness.

As Millennium Fellowships in the Class of 2021, Indio Myles, D'Arcy Smith and The Hidden Initiative's dedicated committee are working on establishing new local partnerships that will be announced in the coming weeks and other exciting initiatives to be rolled out in early 2022 include a beginners Auslan (Australian Sign Language) workshop, launch of an Ambassador program and many more fundraising stalls across Griffith University campuses!

Kathryn Pursche is currently studying a double degree in International Business / Government and International Relations. This is a bit more about her.

I wanted to be a Millennuim Fellow because I believe it will present me with a unique opportunity to work with a committed group of likeminded young leaders all striving towards
a common goal of a better society for all. Through this experience I would hope to learn from those around me and their perspectives, making me a better, more capable leader for
change.

I am currently involved with Artpeace, which is a youth led initiative to bring the arts as a new form of education and self expression to everyone, especially those in lower socioeconomic areas. From there my millennium project is peace of mind, which will ideally work towards SDG's #3, #10. Peace of mind will use mentorship and the arts to encourage better mental health amongst displaced individuals, youth and at-risk senior citizens.

I am really excited for the connections I can make here that I would never have been able to make with out it. Already I have connected with someone in the US that is working on a similar project and we are exchanging ideas and working through problems that we have come across and coming up with solutions that I would never have considered. I am really looking forward to where this might lead!

.somers is studying a Bachelor of Medical Science commencing Doctor of Medicine next year, here is a bit about her and what drive her during the fellowship.

My Millennium Fellowship project: Peek-a-Book is a social enterprise which supports children from a refugee and asylum seeker background. We do this through collecting second hand books from the community, wrapping them into little gifts and writing clues on the wrapping about the genre of the book. These books are sold at stalls to raise funds to support the Youth Program of the Multicultural Families Organisation. We have been able to provide everything from stationary to educational tools and electronics to support the program and make a difference to the lives of children from a refugee and asylum seeker background.
Why I did the Millennium Fellowship: The Millennium Fellowship is the perfect opportunity to further grow and diversify my skillset so that I can make a sustainable and meaningful difference in the community. It gives me the opportunity to learn how to use my passion for entrepreneurship and innovation, to catalyse social change and improve the lives of others.
I thoroughly look forward to entering into this international community of fellows and making my contribution towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
This year I was the COO of ENACTUS and in 2021 I will be commencing my new role as External Relations Officer. I am also the undergraduate representative on the Griffith Learning and Teaching Academy, Student Engagement in Assessment Community of Practice and in its Professional Learning branch. On the side, I also thoroughly enjoy volunteering at the Brisbane Children’s Hospital and doing volleyball and netball social sports.
Fun fact about me is, I am currently reading the Harry Potter series again, but this time I decided to do it in a different language – Dutch.

, is a inspirational and drive women. Her project focuses specifically on SDG 4: Quality Education.
Here is a bit more about her and her project.

The Best of Times Project first started out as a series of thirty illustrations made throughout January, aiming to shed light on the great global changes we had made over the last twenty years! Each illustration demonstrated our progress towards on the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and shared ways we can reach them by 2030. Throughout the Millennium Fellowship, I hope to develop the project further through a series of illustration workshops, teaching booklets and resources to share actionable ways young people can make a difference.

I am passionate about the way the U.N Sustainable Development Goals can act as a symbol of hope and a call to action; in direct opposition to the nihilism, anxiety and depression that deeply effects many young adults. Action most often proceeds an understanding of attainable progress. I believe the SDGs are a powerful tool to give young people hope and a deeper understanding of their own ability to make a difference.

As a Millennium Fellow, I am excited to gain the breadth of knowledge, skills and research I need in order to share this message of hope through my illustration and design-based social enterprise, The Best of Times. Moreover, I am keen to learn besides, collaborate and convene with my fellow student – finding inspiration in the work they are doing to make a difference in the world!

.w.s is a inspirational young women, she is in her second-year Bachelor of Psychology (Hons). Let’s get to know a bit about her.

After experiencing my own hardships with physical and mental health, I've become passionate about supporting others and improving social outcomes for people of diverse backgrounds, which is what inspired me to apply for the Millennium Fellowship. I'm most excited about being able to meet and work with people all over the globe, and learn from their experiences. I'm working on the project 'The Power of Youth (Stories of Peace)', and have the amazing opportunity to interview young people who have not only overcome hardships, but flourished through the challenges they've been through. My personal goal for this project is to empower young people of diverse backgrounds and provide the representation they so often lack, while also educating the wider community on social issues and the power of youth (as is in the name!).

We look forward to see what is in store for her bright future.

Meet Nadya de Vos, she is studying a bachelor of Film and Screen Media Production and is in her 3rd and final year. Here is insight into why she joins the millennium fellowship.

What inspired me:
The Millennium Fellowship is an invaluable programme that allows me to combine my two greatest passions: filmmaking and helping people.

What excites me the most:
To make a positive impact on a small business that has been affected by coronavirus.

Interesting facts & achievements:
I'm producing a post-apocalyptic graduation film this year with a very talented crew. You can follow our journey here:

What my project is about:
Working with two other Millennium Fellows, we're creating a promotional video for a local social enterprise that would otherwise be unable to afford video services.

Good luck, Nadya. We are looking forward to see what you do next.

is studying a Bachelor of Government and International Relations/Bachelor of Asian Studies. Lets get to know her.

What inspired you to apply: In February 2020 I attended the 2nd Peace Summit for Emerging Leaders in Bangkok, Thailand. The event was designed to encourage and empower youth to play an active role in building cohesive and peaceful societies. Following the closing of the summit, I became empowered to address the lack of understanding of hidden disabilities. As a person with Auditory Processing Disorder the project become more personal.

What you are most excited about for the MCN: In a year filled with tension and uncertainty, I am certain The Hidden Initiative and fellow MCN projects will bring humility and inclusion to these times. I am excited to see the community band together to support people with hidden disabilities.

Any interesting facts/achievements: During my tenure at Griffith University, I have travelled to South Korea, China, and Thailand to increase my academic knowledge and network. Previously interned at the Griffith Asia Institutes as a research intern. As a research intern I was tasked with independently collecting data and information, writing a report, and co-publishing a blog. The report and blog informed policy makers on the challenges facing Southeast Asia. Received the Griffith Award for Academic Excellence in 2018.

What project you are working on: The Hidden Initiative strives to spread awareness and understanding for those living with disabilities and mental and/or physical health conditions that aren’t apparent to the naked eye. All the raised funds will be donated to a selected organisation that supports hidden disabilities.

Katharina Gutjahr-Holland is studying a
Bachelor of Health Science (Environmental Health). She applied for the millennium fellowship because of her passionate about social impact and recognise that there were key skills and knowledge missing. “A solid foundation is important to give a project every chance of succeeding and creating positive change. I am super excited to work with other Millennium Fellows at Griffith as well as internationally.”
As part of a team, she is working on growing . This project sells recycled books that are wrapped to hide their covers. The proceeds from this go on to support young people via the Multicultural Families Organisation.
If kat is not studying or working on a project then she loves being in the kitchen trying different recipes from all around the world. “I love seeing the smiles on my family's face when I have aced dinner.” We are looking forward to seeing the bright future that is ahead of Kat.

Julia Hill is a Bachelor of Music candidate at Griffith University, majoring in classical violin. Julia’s Millennium Fellowship project is called MUSE – standing for Musicianship, Unity, Success and Expression. MUSE aims to bring music education and its subsequent benefits to those who can’t afford it due to financial and resource barriers.

At the start of the year, Julia was very new to the concept of impact through social entrepreneurship. When she was told about the Millennium Fellowship, she saw it as the perfect opportunity to learn about how her discipline of music can create positive social change. Julia is most looking forward to engaging with other fellows from all around the world and putting on a concert with the MUSE team in late October.

To find out more about MUSE, feel free to contact Julia at [email protected]
