UNSW Workshop on Translation Technologies

We are very pleased to inform you of the recent success of our free workshop on Translation Technologies held at UNSW on June 6th, 2015.

We welcomed translators and interpreters from NSW and other states with an amazing spread of languages, including: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Khmer, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Tamil.

Workshop presenters Dr. Stephen Doherty and Mr. Sean Cheng from UNSW introduced participants to translation memories and machine translation: the two core technologies in the industry today.

Using a combination of theory and practical sessions, participants learned about the strengths and weaknesses of these technologies, how they have become invaluable additions to contemporary translation workflows, but also pose a range of challenges to us all in our increasingly multilingual and technological society.

We are grateful to the School of Humanities & Languages at UNSW for providing such a well-equipped venue, which really made the event much more accessible for these languages and much more valuable to the participants, and to AUSIT for enabling this collaboration between us and the T&I community.

To Former MODL5109 Students,

Did you take MODL5109 in Semester 2, 2013? If so, you may be interested in participating in an innovative research project on autonomous language learning in the Interpreting and Translation program at the School of Humanities and Languages, UNSW. Details are as follows:

Who can participate? Any student who successfully completed MODL5109 in Semester 2, 2013.

Who is coordinating the project? The research project is being coordinated by Mr Brad Wilke, a Master’s by research candidate in the School of Humanities and Languages. Dr Mira Kim is the main supervisor and Dr Stephen Doherty is the co-supervisor.

What do I need to do? You don’t need to do anything. Just send a brief email to Brad to give consent for Brad to use your assignments you submitted in Semester 2, 2013. His email address is [email protected]. A Personal Information and Consent form will then be sent to you by email with an Instruction Sheet explaining how you can participate.

When do I register? You can express your interest between September 1-September 30, 2014.

Why should I participate? This research aims to investigate the capacity of student translators and interpreters to design, develop and implement autonomous language learning programs. Help us develop a deeper understanding of autonomous language learning in the context of translation and interpreting. In return, you will be provided with a copy of any published paper out of this project.

Warm congratulations to Dr Gyunghee Choi! She graduated with a PhD in Translation Studies at UNSW in June 2014. Her thesis title is "A Study on Logical Meaning Using SFL and the Implications of This for Translation Studies". Here she is with her supervisor Dr Mira Kim.
