Open Day was a whirlwind of demonstrations, discoveries and so much Materials Science and Engineering magic! ✨

There were far too many great moments (and photos!) to fit into one post, so here’s the first of a few highlights from an incredibly busy and fun day.

A huge thank you to all the wonderful students and staff who helped make it possible, we honestly couldn’t have done it without you! 👏

T-minus 16 hours until Open Day officially kicks off! 🚀

We’re getting ready for a big day tomorrow but in the meantime, here are a few of our favourite moments from last year. Don’t worry though, there’s plenty more to look forward to tomorrow!

Join A/Prof. John Daniels and MSE students for our lectures at the Physics Theatre:
1️⃣ 11:30AM – 12:00PM
2️⃣ 2:30PM – 3:00PM

It’s going to be a hot one, so remember to stay sun safe, keep hydrated and make sure you pop over and grab some of our famous liquid nitrogen ice cream 🍦

The countdown to Open Day is on! 🎉

While our preparations have been happening behind the scenes, last Wednesday was the big official training session for our School. We practised, planned and got ready for everything Saturday has in store - and trust us, there’s a lot happening! 🤩

Materials with Superpowers at Science in the Swamp! 🔬✨

We had an incredible (and jam-packed!) day at Centennial Park a few Sundays ago, sharing the world of Materials Science and Engineering with curious minds of all ages.

From shape memory alloys and bulk metallic glass to our Mystery Materials Challenge, and hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials, there was plenty to explore, experiment with and discover. Our younger visitors even had the chance to dress up as future scientists and engineers! 🥼

It was fantastic to meet so many children, families and fellow STEM enthusiasts who were keen to get hands-on, ask questions and learn a little more about the materials that shape our world.

A huge shoutout to Ben, Caitlin and Karen for bringing our Materials with Superpowers stall to life - and thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello! 💛

Back-to-back posts? We’ve got too much to catch up on to slow down 👀

🎓 Our Scholarship Stories continues with Ben Robinson!

As a first-year Materials Science and Engineering student, Ben is just beginning his UNSW journey – and receiving the Thompson Family Endowed Scholarship has already made a meaningful difference.

By easing financial pressure, the scholarship has given Ben more time to focus on his studies, get involved in student life and connect with the Materials Science and Engineering community, including MATSOC and the MSE UG Peer Mentoring Program.

Looking ahead, Ben hopes to continue into postgraduate study before pursuing a career as a materials engineer or scientist with an environmental focus 🌱

From Professional Practice to the presentation stage 🎤✨

The annual MSE Professional Practice Presentation Night brought students together to share the experiences, skills and lessons gained during their industry placements – with plenty of great presentations, conversations and connections along the way!

🏆 Congratulations to our prize winners, and a huge thank you to our judges and industry guests for sharing their time and expertise.

And, of course, thank you to the MSE Staff and MATSOC students who helped bring the night together! 🤝

A fun (and slightly competitive 👀) way to wrap up Term 2 with our MSE UG Peer Mentoring community! 🎉🍕

Students put their knowledge to the test with Hard Quiz — featuring everything from Ninjago and sailing to The Big Bang Theory — before moving on to Heads or Tails and Rock Paper Scissors, with popper balls up for grabs as prizes 🏆

More importantly, it was a great chance to take a break, share some pizza, catch up and make some new introductions before the end of term. It was also lovely to have a few familiar faces from Chem Eng join us and add to the sense of community across the programs.

Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a relaxed and fun way to close out the term! 💛

Our recent Peer Mentoring De-Stress: Craft Break was all about taking a well-earned breather from the end-of-term rush🖍️ Students dropped in for some colouring, free drawing, snacks and good company before the final push towards exams.
