We are a tertiary provider of leading edge accredited theological education in the tradition of the Orthodox Church. Since 1982 we have been educating men and women in the service of the Church. History:

The history of theological education in Sydney’s Coptic Orthodox Church has deep roots. Cyril’s, a dedicated group of men and women undertook the service of establishing Pope Shenouda III Coptic

Orthodox Theological College, the first Coptic Theological College established outside of Egypt. In later years the College, in a bid to better service the Church and Academy, restructured as an accredited institution: St Cyril’s Coptic Orthodox Theological College (SCTC). In a global first, St Cyril’s now offers the first stand-alone Masters degree in Orthodox Theology according to the Coptic tradition.

Special Guest Lecturer for Patristics – Rabbi Benjamin Elton

St Cyril’s was privileged to host Rabbi Dr Benjamin Elton as a guest lecturer for the Early Church Father’s unit. Rabbi Benjamin is the Chief Rabbi of the Great Synagogue in Sydney, and presented to us on the fascinating topic of the 1st century Jewish exegete, Philo of Alexandria. Philo’s Hellenised approach to scriptural exegesis created a methodological paradigm which would be carried over into the Christian exegetical tradition of Alexandrian. Besides pioneering the use of allegory for Scriptural interpretation, many of the themes he dealt with such as divine transcendence, and a logocentric cosmology would go on to become features of through found in subsequent Christian Church fathers. Within the Jewish tradition, we learnt from Rabbi Benjamin that the legacy of Philo was short lived, only to be reassessed in the 19th century. However, his legacy was very much kept alive and embraced withing the early Church.
