The School of Environment, Science & Engineering currently supports over 100 new post-graduate researchers, addressing every contemporary local, regional and global issue you could imagine in a variety of environment and engineering fields. This symposium will showcase the diverse range of research and provide opportunities for our community, within and without the University, to connect and collaborate.

A big thank you to everyone who supported our conference - the organisers, speakers, student volunteers, session chairs, keynote speakers and of course our audience members. It was a huge success and we are pleased to announce that the prize winners were as follows:

Welcome to day 2 of RISE! We kick off at 9am with a keynote talk from Prof. Bill MacGillivray, followed by sessions in Plant & Forest Science and Archaeometry and Isotope Geochemistry. Today also sees the prizes for Best Student Presentations awarded during the lunch break.

What a great first day! Thanks to all our speakers and session chairs for sharing their latest research with us. Don't forget that the conference dinner is at 6.30pm tonight at the Terrace Bar (Richmond Hotel, Lismore), and that day 2 kicks off tomorrow morning at 9am. See you there!

Today's the day! The conference starts at 9.20 am in U2.31 (the lecture theatre next to the SESE office) with a keynote talk from Professor Leigh Sullivan. Our student talks today fall under three themes: Biogeochemistry, social sciences and marine and freshwater ecology. A full timetable has been posted outside the lecture theatre and also outside the SESE staff room. You are welcome to attend the talks even if you didn't register.

Speakers - you have been emailed a provisional timetable, please check it and let us know if there are any problems. If you submitted an abstract and you haven't been emailed the timetable, please email us at [email protected] ASAP.

Everyone - you have been emailed an invite to the conference, please fill in the registration form and get it back to us by 10th October so we can organise catering and logistics.

Southern Cross University's School of Environment, Science and Engineering will be hosting its 3rd annual Research in Science, Engineering and Environment (RISE) conference at the Lismore campus on October Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd, 2014. RISE 2014 aims to facilitate professional development and promote a collaborative postgraduate research environment. The conference offers an excellent platform for postgraduate students to showcase their research, while honing their presentation and communication skills in a supportive atmosphere. Further, RISE 2014 will include exciting presentations from key technical, academic and research staff. Sessions will be chaired by early career researchers and cover themes including Marine and Freshwater Ecology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Plant Science, Geochemistry, Forest Science, Coastal Processes, Environmental and Civil Engineering and Social Science.

Postgraduate (including Honours) students are encouraged to submit an abstract (i.e. for oral or poster presentation) reporting their research to [email protected]. Abstracts will be used for selection purposes, with successful submissions published in the RISE 2014 Abstract Book. All abstracts must be constructed within the template (check your SCU emails) using the formatting guidelines provided (i.e. without formatting alterations) and submitted before Friday August 29th 2014.

Presentation duration will be 15 minutes, plus an additional 5 for questions. Prizes for excellent student presentations will be awarded to selected participants. Please contact the RISE 2014 organisation team ([email protected]) for further information, or ask us a question here!
