B. Braun and the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia have opened the Wound Closure Challenge! Submit a short case study and you could receive one of two $500 professional development grants, awarded at the ICEN Conference Dinner in Hobart on 16 October 2026.

One grant for a regional or remote hospital, and another for a major city hospital.

Today, the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia recognises Andrew Simmons known to colleagues as "Simmo," for his remarkable contribution to emergency nursing, youth injury prevention, and mentorship.

Andrew's path into nursing was not a conventional one. He began his working life in a blue-collar career before retraining as a nurse, going on to specialise in emergency nursing and paediatrics at Latrobe Regional Health, where he has spent 25 years and progressed to Assistant Unit Manager.

Over more than two decades in emergency nursing, Andrew has valued the chance to support people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives and takes particular pride in educating junior nurses and mentoring colleagues, helping them build confidence in emergency care. He was also instrumental in establishing and co-leading the P.A.R.T.Y. program (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) at Latrobe Regional Health, which educates hundreds of young rural people each year about the consequences of risk-taking behaviour.

Andrew has also become known as the hospital's go-to person for difficult cannulas ("Where's Simmo?" they ask), a skill built over years of experience that he now shares by teaching others. Working through COVID was another defining period in his career, reinforcing for him the importance of teamwork, adaptability and supporting one another.

Andrew's advice for nurses starting out is to be curious, be willing to learn, and never be afraid to ask questions. He encourages nurses to develop their clinical skills while remembering that good emergency nursing is also about communication, compassion and treating every patient as an individual, and above all, to look after their colleagues, since the support given on a difficult shift can make all the difference. “Chocolates help, too”.

"Emergency nursing has given me far more than a career. It has given me lifelong colleagues, constant opportunities to learn and the privilege of making a difference when people need it most. At 70, people keep asking me when I am going to retire, but I respond that I still love my job, so why would I stop?"

Today, the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia recognises Barbara Daly and her remarkable contribution to emergency nursing, health service leadership, and public service.

Barbara has been in the emergency nursing profession since 1985, working across a range of Sydney sites including St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital, Sydney Children's Hospital, and Prince of Wales Hospital. She served as Nurse Manager of Prince of Wales Emergency from 1991 to 2012, and her Master’s thesis, "A Crowded House: Using an Action Research Approach to Address the Problem of Access Block at the Prince of Wales Hospital," was also centred on emergency care.

Since 2017, Barbara has held the senior executive position of Co-Director of Nursing and Operations of the Emergency Specialist and Continuing Medicine Program at Prince of Wales Hospital. She has also acted as Director of Nursing and Support Services at Sydney, Sydney Eye Hospital, Director of Nursing and Support Services at Prince of Wales Hospital, and Director of Nursing at Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick, in 2019, 2021 and 2023 respectively.

Between 2005 and 2017, Barbara held multiple ministerial appointments, including Senior Project Officer for the NSW Ministry of Health's 90 Day Challenge, for which she won the 2017 Premier's Award for Public Service Nomination, alongside roles on the Ministerial Taskforce for Emergency Care, the NSW Healthcare Advisory Council, and the NSW Critical Care Health Priority Taskforce. She has also received the NSW Premier's Safety Achievement Award from the NSW Labour Council, and a 2009 NSW Health Award for "Improving Patient Experience: Telling It Like It Is, Emergency Care Through the Patient's Eyes."
