Join us for the 2026 NSW ACE Winter Meeting on Saturday 20 June 2026 at Hilton Hotel Sydney. Cardiac complexity is becoming an everyday reality in anaesthesia practice. Across theatres, preop clinics and emergency settings, we’re encountering patients with increasingly intricate cardiac histories, and the pace of change in cardiology means the goalposts never stay still for long. This year’s meeting, “Hearts at the Hilton” is built around that evolving landscape – a chance to pause, recalibrate, and deepen our understanding of the cardiac challenges shaping modern perioperative care.

Our program brings together a broad spectrum of topics designed to support anaesthetists at every stage of practice. We’ll explore contemporary approaches to perioperative cardiac risk and unpack the essentials of cardiology that matter most in our day-to-day decision making. Obstetric cardiac cases will also feature, reflecting the unique considerations these populations bring to the table.

Practical skills remain front and centre. Perioperative ECG and rhythm analysis will be incorporated, while updates on heart failure and STEMI definitions will ensure we’re aligned with current evidence and terminology. As always, the program has been shaped with annual CPD requirements in mind, incorporating emergency response activities, and opportunities for meaningful critical reflection.

We are very pleased that anaesthetist Dr Tanya Selak, who practises here at Wollongong Private Hospital, has been appointed president of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).

Dr Selak is the college’s first president from a regional centre and is a strong advocate for equal access to high-quality healthcare. She is pictured here with outgoing president Dave Story and ANZCA CEO Lance Emerson.

Yesterday was a spectacular Saturday at the 2026 ANZCA ASM! The day began with a pōwhiri, continued with a host of fascinating talks from our keynote speakers in the plenary sessions, before we jumped into concurrent sessions, workshops and fast take sessions. A real highlight – as always – was the College Ceremony, where we welcomed 261 new FANZCAs and FFPMANZCAs. This was followed by celebrations at the Welcome Reception, where it was revealed that the 2026 ASM artwork was being projected onto the Sky Tower, lighting up Auckland’s skyline! Great afternoon at ANZCA ASM with back to back sessions exploring non-clinical topics - from wellbeing and career fulfilment to where anaesthesia leadership can take you. With fantastic speakers sharing their personal experiences and insightful knowledge including Dr Nola Ng. Speaking in both sessions Nola explained the importance of organisational support in the right, evidence based, areas to improve wellbeing followed by her experience getting into leadership and working to make some of these changes at a policy level.

ANZCA fellows and trainees now have expanded opportunities to publish open access under a new college agreement with Wiley and Taylor & Francis journals! This will allow ANZCA-affiliated authors to publish open access without paying article processing charges (APCs).

To help you get started, Wiley is hosting a free online author workshop on Wednesday 25 February 2026, 2–3pm AEDT.

The webinar will cover:
• How the agreement works for authors.
• Submitting to Wiley journals with APCs covered.
• Peer review, ethics, and publication tips.
• Resources to support successful publishing.
