🔹 Podiatric Surgeons Halve Diabetes-Related Foot Amputations — But Access Remains Unequal

New clinical data shows that integrating podiatric surgeons into diabetic-foot teams cuts amputation rates by nearly 50%.
Despite this compelling evidence, many Australians with diabetes still cannot access podiatric surgical care within public hospital limb-salvage pathways.

🇦🇺 Each year, over 4,400 Australians lose a limb due to diabetes-related complications — most beginning as small, treatable ulcers.
In countries where podiatric surgeons are embedded in multidisciplinary diabetic-foot teams, early surgical intervention preserves tissue, mobility, and independence, preventing many of these life-altering outcomes.

In Australia, access to podiatric surgical expertise in public diabetic-foot pathways remains limited — not due to capability, but because of historic service models and structural barriers.
Improving collaboration and referral frameworks can ensure patients receive timely, limb-saving care from all qualified specialists.

🦶 The path forward is clear:
To reduce preventable amputations, podiatric surgeons should be fully integrated into multidisciplinary diabetic-foot teams nationwide, just as they are in the United Kingdom and other modern health systems.

Every patient deserves access to all available limb-preserving expertise.

📚 Evidence
A six-year UK community-based diabetic-foot program demonstrated a ~50% reduction in amputations after podiatric surgeons became part of the multidisciplinary pathway.
