Ngarara Willim, RMIT Centre has marked their 30 year anniversary with a celebration at RMIT’s iconic Storey Hall.

The Indigenous-led centre supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across RMIT’s vocational and higher education programs, strengthening cultural connection, community and a sense of belonging during their studies.

Over the years, the centre has grown to offer outreach and access programs, scholarships, academic support and cultural programs, global study experiences and careers initiatives.

Today, almost 1,600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates are part of RMIT’s Deadly Alumni community, with a further 100 Indigenous students expected to graduate in 2026.

Friday’s celebration brought together students, alumni, Elders, staff and community members. Alumni were central to the evening, from MC Jedda Atkinson-Costa and musician Canisha to guest speakers Professor Uncle Mark Rose AM and Professor N’arwee’t Carolyn Briggs AM.

Kimberly Lovegrove was also celebrated as the inaugural recipient of the Deadly Alumni Award.

Cauliflower leaves could be your next source of gains! 💪

Cauliflower leaves are abundant but often discarded during processing, despite containing protein and dietary fibre. An RMIT innovation uses ultrasound to extract leaf protein from discarded cauliflower leaves, identifying a potential new use for vegetable scraps.
 
The early-stage research found that high-power ultrasound increased dry matter yield and improved protein recovery from the leaves, while different processing settings changed the final concentrate’s particle size, colour, solubility and structure.
 
The resulting leaf protein concentrate could have future food and animal feed applications.

Nanotechnology is probably not what you think. 
 
Pop culture often depicts nanotech either destroying the world or saving it, but in real life, nanotech and nanomaterials are already useful in practical ways. One area that material scientists and engineers like Dr Lei Bao are focused on, is how nanomaterials can be used to improve different aspects of health treatment, from wound care to cancer therapeutics.
 
Dr Lei Bao’s focus is carbon dots, a tiny material made out of carbon that can display many different properties useful for things like telling us what’s going on inside a cell, helping wounds heal, and potentially targeting cancer cells, opening up new possible avenues for cancer treatment.

This new wastewater treatment material rapidly removes micro and nano plastics, and even some PFAS.

The invention, a dark adsorbent material that can be added to wastewater and separated with a magnet, builds on the team's 2022 breakthrough, extending performance to much smaller particles and more complex wastewater.

In lab testing, the material removed more than 95 per cent of micro‑ and nano‑plastics, including particles as small as 30 nanometres, within one hour. The material also removed more than 95 per cent of tested contaminants including mercury, chromium, copper, dyes and ibuprofen.
