The germ of this book was a series of public lectures, delivered at Indiana University in 1960, dealing with the aims of Science. What is it, the author asks, that justifies us in calling an investigation or theory a scientific one? And what makes one particular theory or investigation better or worse than another one?He concludes that the essence of science lies in our search for understanding and for a rational pattern that makes sense of events in the world. Philosophically, the heart of this book is the analysis of the 'ideals of natural order', or basic assumptions, that scientists in any historical era regard as self-explanatory and inevitable. The exposition is illustrated with numerous historical examples, and will be
of importance to historians of science as well as to students of philosophy.

The subject may sound remote from the ordinary reader; but so clearly and vividly does Dr. Toulmin present it that many others beside philosophers, historians and scientists will enjoy the book.

This is the second monograph to be published in association with the Nuffield Foundation Unit for the History of Ideas.

Occasionalism is generally associated in the history of philosophy with the name of Malébranche . But long before this time, the Muslim Theologians of the ninth and tenth centuries had developed an occasionalist metaphysics of atoms and accidents. Arguing that a number of distinctively Islamic concepts such as fatalism and the surrender of personal endeavour cannot be fully understood except in the perspective of the occasionalist world view of Islam, the volume also discusses the attacks on Occasionalism made by Averroes and St. Thomas Aquinas.

This study provides a description of how the idea of the Risālat ut-tair existed in many spiritual works long before Ibn Sina.
Inspired by the content and form of some of the earlier works, Ibn Sina created an epistle which contained his own spiritual itinerary and called it the Risālat ut-tair. An epistle that reflects the mystical development in the mentality of Ibn Sina in his last years of life. It has been shown that Ibn Sina takes mysticism as a bridge of enlightenment, which leads philosophy to hikma.
