Calling secondary schools with Year 7 students!
Our research team is seeking eligible NSW government schools to partner with us in delivering the Health4Life Parents & Teens program — a health initiative designed for year 7 students and their parents to support adolescents in building healthy habits around screen time, sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and more. The program is aligned with NSW PDHPE curriculum, and easy for PDHPE teachers to deliver. Participating schools will receive up to $750 in gift cards.

Visit www.parentsandteens.org.au now to express interest. We’d love to work with your school to support student wellbeing.

Great to see research from our team adding to the growing evidence on the mental health benefits of organised sport for children and adolescents. Made possible through the support that underpins our research community at Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), this extensive review shows how team sport can foster wellbeing, confidence, and positive social connections for young people.

Findings examining sport participation and mental health in children and adolescents reveal that organised sport, particularly team sport, can be a powerful setting for supporting mental health and social development.

Exercise is one of the most evidence‑backed tools we have for ageing well — and Global Sport and Movement Collaborative's Professor Ron Plotnikoff and Dr Emily Cox recently shared why on the Be Well Age Well podcast with hosts Dr John Ward and Dr Susannah Ward.

Their episode, Pillar 1: Exercise for Life – Building Strength, Function & Longevity at Any Age, explores what the science really tells us about exercise, independence, and quality of life across the lifespan.

From strength and balance to starting exercise later in life and navigating physical activity with chronic illness, the conversation cuts through myths and fear to focus on function, confidence, and staying independent — at any age.

Research from Professor David Lubans and the Global Sport and Movement Collaborative proving that simple leadership opportunities can change kids’ confidence, fitness and focus.

What happens when every child gets the chance to step up and lead?

Research from HMRI’s Global Sport and Movement Collaborative shows that giving students real opportunities to lead can lift wellbeing, build fitness and improve focus in the classroom. It is a simple shift that could help shape healthier, more confident futures for our kids.

The Learning to Lead program, led by Professor David Lubans from The University of Newcastle, Australia, involved more than 1,800 students across 20 NSW primary schools. The idea was straightforward but powerful. Make leadership part of everyday learning and open it up to every student, not just the ones who naturally stand out.

Older students who stepped up as leaders grew in focus, confidence and wellbeing, spending 7% more time on-task during lessons and bucking the typical decline in mental health often seen as kids approach adolescence.

The younger students they taught moved more during the school day, got fitter, and felt more capable in their own abilities, with measurable improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and daily physical activity. And the program fits neatly into the existing school day, so there's no extra pressure on teachers or students.

It is a fresh and research backed approach to leadership in schools. Designed to fit seamlessly into the school day, L2L creates academic, psychological and physical benefits that strengthen the entire school community.

Amazing to see GSMC Professor Philip Morgan and his team’s Healthy Dads Programs receiving international attention! 🙌

The Scottish prisons version of the program was recently featured on BBC World Service’s “People Fixing the World”, where journalist Myra Anubi called it one of the most moving stories she’s covered.

The program continues to grow, with major new funding in Scotland and here in NSW — where the first workshop with NSW Corrective Services has just begun.

Such powerful recognition for an initiative changing lives around the world. 👏
