We will contribute to a new project developing smart surfboard fins to help reduce shark attack risk.

Image: key Surf Flex Lab team members Magda and Pawel

Co-funded by the Australian Composites Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre and led by Gowing Bros Ltd FCS UNSW, Vert Design and University of Wollongong the research team will use advanced composite manufacturing techniques to create smart composite fins.

The fins will be embedded with shark-repellent technologies including miniaturised sensors, electromagnetic systems and illumination features that increase surfer safety while maintaining board performance.

In addition we will be exploring the gamification of surfing through performance tracking sensors (think how many buckets of spray and how much boooooom when doing turns 😜)

Our latest project (spearheaded by Pawel) dives into foil board construction.

This video shows the early stages of foil board production: blank preparation with stringer incorporation and CNC cutting in our Prototyping Lab at the Innovation Campus in Wollongong Australia 🇦🇺
