WestPride Archives WestPride Archives
(formerly GALAWA | Gay And Le***an Archive of Western Australia)

GALAWA formed in the mid 1990s to collect and protect, precious material from the community. The GALAWA collection is housed securely in the basement of Murdoch University Library. A new committee formed in 2015 to revitalise the collection and we are working towards this. GALAWA is always interested in new members who wish to join and be a part of the committee, assist with archival work or to assist in other ways.

WestPride has so many different kinds of objects: posters, tapes from the 1970s, banners, books, costumes, badges, letters, magazines etc. How to keep it all safe? We have just completed a Preservation Needs Assessment of the entire archive - Thanks to a grant from the National Library of Australia’s Community Heritage Grant Program ! We were able to secure the services of Stephanie Baily, who was ably assisted by our wonderful volunteers, who helped her unearth many of the treasures of our collection. We are so grateful to Special Collections at who house us and to for supporting small (but important) unique archives like ours 🩷

This art prize is unique in that it asks artists to respond to a verse- in this case ‘What is Truth: I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ Genesis 3:10b
The exhibition continues at Holmes a Court Gallery, 10 Douglas Street, Gooyaman/West Perth 9-30 May.
Wed-Fri 11-5 pm, Sat 12-4 pm
Free entry and All welcome.
It’s a great exhibition by some wonderful artists- thanks again to all the Christian churches in Western Australia that support this courageous exhibition.

Joy acknowledges s*x workers who have lived and worked in and around Darlinghurst since colonisation. It pays tribute to the complex and significant role of s*x workers in the shaping of Sydney’s social, economic and legal history with NSW being the first place in the world to decriminalise s*x work.
Joy, in her original form, was one of the world’s first sculptures of a s*x worker. The statue, which proved controversial, was located at the corner of Stanley and Yurong streets in East Sydney for 18 months from November 1995, before being relocated to its permanent home at Macquarie University. The current artwork, created by an artist Loui Fraser, is a replica in bronze. It’s back to its original location.
