☢️ Radiation: Friend or Foe?
It was wonderful to see our PhD candidate, Kaylee Molin, presenting at the recent "PhD Surgery" session hosted by the Forrest Research Foundation.

PhD Surgery is an informal forum that brings together students and postdoctoral researchers to share interesting , explore new ideas, and discuss challenges in an open and collaborative environment.

These events provide a valuable opportunity for researchers from diverse disciplines to connect, exchange perspectives, and strengthen the research community.

Kaylee's presentation, "Radiation: Friend or Foe?", sparked engaging discussions on the role of in science and medicine, highlighting both its benefits and challenges.

Congratulations to our wonderful graduate Jasper Greenland and team for publishing in the International Journal of Particle Therapy, the official journal of the PARTICLE THERAPY COOPERATIVE GROUP.

The title of paper is: "Emerging Outcome Trends From Proton Therapy for Pediatric CNS Tumors: A Systematic Review".

The study was Jasper's masters project in Medical Physics at UWA.

This systematic review of in CNS tumors synthesizes 77 studies and shows generally strong long-term survival and disease control, particularly in low-grade glioma and craniopharyngioma, with significant outcome trends also seen in medulloblastoma, ependymoma, and skull base chordoma.

It also highlights important late toxicities (endocrine, neurologic, vascular, and hearing effects) that vary by tumor type. Overall, the study provides clearer prognostic benchmarks to guide treatment planning and family counseling in pediatric proton therapy.

Today our PhD student Gabriella La Macchia presented at the Cancer Network Forum: Inspiring the Future of Excellence in Cancer Care.
The title of Gabriella’s presentation was: Developing an Integrated Radiation Oncology Real-World Clinical Registry: Literature Review and Clinician Survey Insights.

Graduate Profile: Xavier Jones – High-Achieving Masters Graduate with a Vision for Clinical Practice in Medical Physics

We are delighted to highlight the achievements of one of our outstanding graduates, Xavier Jones, who has transitioned seamlessly from academic excellence into clinical practice.

Xavier completed a double major in and before pursuing a Master of Physics (Medical Physics) at The University of Western Australia, reflecting his strong interdisciplinary foundation and commitment to the field. He graduated in 2024 with Distinctions and immediately commenced a position as a Registrar of Medical Physics (ROMP) in Austin Victoria, marking an important step toward clinical accreditation.

Juliet Li – Graduate Profile: Bridging Research, Innovation, and Clinical Practice in Medical Physics

We are pleased to highlight the achievements of one of our outstanding graduates, Juliet Li, who has commenced a while also undertaking a professional role within the Department of Health (WA Health).

Juliet holds a double major in Physics and Data Science—a powerful combination for success in the field of medical physics—along with a Master of Physics (Medical Physics), reflecting her strong commitment to academic excellence and professional development.

She is currently pursuing a part-time PhD with our group while working full-time at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH), demonstrating balance between research and clinical practice.
