Awareness of the ACT's decriminalisation reform has increased following implementation, with most recognising it applied only to possession, according to NDARC-led researchers.

“Yet confusion about the legal status and potential penalties for small-quantity possession drug offences persisted, which may undermine the reform's harm reduction and diversion objectives,” they wrote in a new study.

“While the majority of Australian illicit alcohol consumption appears to be unwitting, suggesting that the demand for illicit alcohol is driven by alcohol retailers rather than consumers, illicit to***co and ni****ne are actively sought out by consumers.”

NDARC researchers Dr Michala Kowalski and A/Prof Ryan Courtney, plus Dr Nic Taylor from National Drug Research Institute (NDRI), write about the importance of supply and demand in the development of illicit markets for licit products.

📲 📈 There is strong potential demand for smartphone-delivered versus in-person contingency management among people who use methamphetamine in Australia, an NDARC-led study shows.

The findings suggest this psychosocial treatment approach "should provide individuals with the option of a predictable reinforcement schedule, offer cash and voucher rewards and incorporate adjunctive support, particularly drug counselling and withdrawal management".
