It was a privilege to celebrate our QATSIF graduands here at UniSC last Wednesday, recognising their achievements, resilience and the bright futures ahead of them. We are honoured to host this celebration each year and to play even a small part in the journeys of these remarkable students as they reach this important milestone. We also acknowledge the extraordinary dedication of QATSIF Director, Mike Nayler, who will retire from QATSIF at the end of this year. Mike has worked tirelessly to honour the legacy of Aunty Ruth Hegarty and ensure that the experiences of those who were victims of stolen wages are remembered, respected, and continue to shape the work of QATSIF. We thank Mike for his remarkable contribution and wish him every happiness in his retirement QATSIF

Fifty Years of Deadly marks a milestone. It’s a tribute to the people who built this movement. the Elders who stood firm, the organisers who made space, the artists who turned resistance into expression, and the communities who keep showing up, year after year.

It’s also about the here and now, who we are today. Grounded in culture. Strong in our identity. Leading change across every field, from health and education to media, business, and the arts. We’re telling our own stories, in our own way, on our own terms

We honour what came before by continuing the work.

This is our story. This is our celebration. This is our future.

Still deadly. Always.

On 3 June, Australians commemorate Mabo Day, marking the anniversary of the historic Mabo decision.

Eddie Mabo of Mer island in the Torres Strait spent a decade seeking official recognition of his people’s ownership of Mer and on 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia agreed, rejecting the doctrine that Australia was terra nullius (land belonging to no-one) at the time of European settlement.

“For me, Dad’s legacy is that through strength of culture and commitment you can achieve anything. People who are fighting for their own native title have to believe in themselves and their culture because that is what will help them succeed.
“His strength was that he knew who he was as a man, where he was from and that the fight he was doing was right. He always knew the land was his,” - Gail Mabo

From Sorry to Action.

The call is clear, we must move from words to action, and this needs to happen now, not in another decade.

Acknowledging past harm is important, but acting to address it is critical.

Sorry signals compassion, action delivers justice.

We encourage you to mark National
Sorry Day on 26 May, and to stand with us to ensure this day is part of an ongoing commitment to truth-telling and healing.
