Abstract
Despite the potential for out-of-class learning provided by the internet, technology, mobile devices and the media, teachers and students spend a great deal of instructional time in classrooms. A full-time teacher might spend 30,000 to 40,000 hours in front of a classroom over their careers. Children who are in school from the time they are 5 to 18 typically spend an average of 900 hours a year and a total of 11,700 total instructional hours in classroom instruction. Classroom language teaching and learning involve cognitive, social, emotional, and cultural social dimensions, and classroom life is shaped by aspects of teachers' and learners’ sense of themselves. The focus in this presentation is on aspects of how these are understood and the influence they have on teachers' and learners’ engagement in classroom teaching.
