This year, as we celebrate 45 years of Kingsford Legal Centre UNSW, we're proud to spotlight Law & Justice alumni whose time at KLC helped shape their career paths, inspiring a lifelong commitment to justice, advocacy and community service.

⭐️ Meet Lester Fernandez SC

Graduating with a Bachelor of Laws and returning ten years later to complete his Master of Laws, Lester Fernandez SC credits much of his professional direction to experiences beyond the classroom, particularly his time at KLC. Those experiences sparked a passion for advocacy and access to justice, leading him to a children's legal service, Legal Aid NSW, and ultimately to the Bar.

Now a Senior Counsel, Lester attributes much of his growth to exceptional colleagues and clients, noting their shared attribute of treating everyone with equal respect and courtesy.

His advice for today's students? "Be open to the many surprises life offers. Follow your passion. And whatever it is that you do, make sure you do something which will help those in our society who have not had the advantages you have had."

That’s how final-year UNSW Law & Justice student Geoffrey Zhen described his recent semester abroad at the Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) in London.

It’s one of several international opportunities that give UNSW Law & Justice students the chance to broaden their studies and life experience in another part of the world.

⭐️ Meet Brandy Tsang

From aspiring litigator to Director & Managing Legal Counsel at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Brandy Tsang's career demonstrates the value of embracing unexpected opportunities.

At BCG, Brandy works across commercial law, compliance, and regulatory matters, while also leading Pride@BCG across Australia and New Zealand. She is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion, a public speaker, and is preparing for her debut at this year's Sydney Comedy Fringe Festival.

Brandy is a valued member of the Centre for the Future of the Legal Profession (CFLP) Advisory Board and a recent mentor at the Law & Justice Pop Up Mentoring Series. Her advice to students and early-career lawyers:

"There are lessons in every opportunity. Don't overlook them. Building a meaningful career in law takes time and patience, and the path rarely looks the way you expect it to at the start."

💼 Through a joint opportunity with Legal Aid NSW, UNSW Law & Justice students have the chance to apply for one of six three-week internships to get a taste of what it’s like to work as a lawyer in regional communities.

“Directly aligned with our strategic vision in Law & Justice 2030, this unique initiative with Legal Aid NSW both enriches student learning and supports the delivery of legal services where they are needed most,” UNSW Law & Justice Dean Professor Andrew Lynch says.

Students will have the chance to intern in Broken Hill, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga.

“Students will gain practical experience across a broad range of legal matters, work closely with experienced solicitors and see firsthand the important role Legal Aid NSW plays in supporting local communities,” Legal Aid NSW Associate Director Steven Wright says.

“Elevating others, remaining curious with compassion, and showing humanity were some of the best foundations that I found for career and life.”

Those were the some of the humble words spoken by alumna and former UNSW lecturer and Council member Maxine Brenner on receiving a UNSW Honorary Doctor of Laws during the August graduations. 🎓

Maxine has been recognised for her distinguished career in law, education, corporate governance and leadership that has had a nationally significant impact.

Her enduring connection to UNSW is reflected in her service on the UNSW Council, which recently concluded after more than a decade of service.
