We thought we would mix it up today with a Flashback Friday. Today’s flashback is about the Post-War Boom.

The end of WWII saw a sharp increase in enrolments at St Andrew’s, as returned ex-servicemen resumed – or commenced – their university studies, which resulted in a student accommodation crisis. The College was able to come up with a solution – four ex-Army huts were acquired by the College and erected in the grounds as student accommodation. However, this was recognised by all as an unsatisfactory stop-gap measure, not only because of the rudimentary nature of the huts, but also because of the resentment created by inequalities in accommodation.

Today, we are lucky to have all of our students in brick and mortar buildings and plan to keep it that way!

On Thursday 26 March, SACAS and the Young Alumni Committee hosted the annual Young Alumni Social Drinks at Henley’s Bar and Kitchen in Sydney CBD.

It was a great night catching up with familiar faces and making new connections over drinks and great conversation. A highlight of the night was hearing from Drew’s own Antarctic adventurer Tom Hunt (Fr 2017), who shared astonishing insights into his expedition — from the physical and mental challenges to the moments that made it all worthwhile. The discussion, steered by Charlie Jeavons-Fellows (Fr 2018), was followed by an eye-opening Q&A with the audience and Tom handing out an exclusive South Pole shirt to a lucky winner.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for such a fun and inspiring night!

It was a pleasure to welcome our 1966 Freshers back to College for their 60th Reunion Lunch last week - a wonderful afternoon of reconnection, reflection, and celebration.

Alongside a lovely three-course meal, guests enjoyed a tour of the College to see the progress and changes over the years, as well as personalised archival packs featuring many memories from their time at College.

We loved seeing special pieces of College history brought along for the occasion — including Fred Schilling’s College tie and a copy of the original Fresher list shared by Richard Lander.

There were also some particularly special moments shared on the day, with Ian Harman reflecting on meeting and marrying his wife in the College Chapel 56 years ago, and Geoffrey Needham being visited by his grandson and current student, Joe Quilty (Fr 2025).

Most of all, it was incredibly special to witness the strength of connection across the group, even after many years apart.

Thank you to Tom Yim and Joe Campbell for instigating such a fantastic reunion. With plans already underway for the next gathering in five years’ time, we look forward to welcoming this group back again for their 65th reunion - if not sooner.

Our Canberra Regional Reunion last Thursday 26th March was a wonderful evening, bringing together alumni and parents of current students to share stories, reconnect, and celebrate the community that makes St Andrew’s so special.

A highlight of the night was John Sparksman’s moving recitation of Dylan Thomas’s Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night - a fitting reminder that the Androvian spirit burns bright, whatever the chapter.

We enjoyed sharing updates from the College and reconnecting with so many of you. A sincere thank you to David Kenyon (Fr 1975) for once again hosting us at the Commonwealth Club - a magnificent setting for the evening.

We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us and look forward to seeing you again soon.

On Thursday 5 March, we officially launched the Semester 1 SACAS Mentoring Program with a special event in the College’s Junior Common Room.

We’re thrilled that over 50 alumni and Drew’s parents have signed up this semester to mentor our students – further growing last semester’s pool.

Over 80 Mentors and Mentees connected over drinks and canapés, hearing from Principal Dr Daniel Tyler and Director of Advancement Hannah Atwell, who shared the vision and purpose behind the program.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for such a fantastic night - we can’t wait to see you all again at the Closing Celebration in May!

Congratulations to Drew’s alumnus Josh Dowse (Fr 1982) on the recent publication of his new book ESG Unlocked, co-authored with Ian Wood.

Josh is considered one of Australia’s most trusted thought partners on ESG, sustainability, energy and climate change. Having prepared and reviewed various ESG strategies, and facilitated significant national public documents such as the AEMO’s Integrated Systems Plan and CSIRO’s Australian National Outlook.

The book explores how today’s leaders and investors build long-term value by strengthening natural, social, human and financial capital — showing why ESG isn’t a trend, but modern capitalism done wisely.

It’s inspiring to see our alumni shaping global conversations on business, sustainability and leadership beyond Andrew’s.

Last Friday, the Alumni Society proudly hosted our annual Women in Leadership Luncheon, welcoming Andrew’s alumnae, current students and senior staff for a vibrant afternoon of connection and conversation.

We were honoured to hear from a friend of the College, Sally Mcdonald, an accomplished brand, digital and retail CEO and Non-Executive Director, who joined us as our guest speaker. Those in attendance were deeply inspired by Sally’s candid reflections on her career journey, the challenges she has navigated, and the success she has achieved as a woman in a high-profile leadership role.

It was a truly engaging and enjoyable event, and we look forward to creating more opportunities to connect and celebrate our alumni community throughout 2026.
