THE CAROUSEL - Pippa Ellams' gift for perceptive and comedic writing shines thanks to clear and clever direction by Hannah Goodwin. Alex Anne Francis and Tasha O'Brien's comic timing is first-class, and equally affecting is their talent for drama and, notably, their chemistry as "sisters". A truly enjoyable and memorable show.

Sam Dowdeswell as SOPHIE

Samantha Dowdeswell makes her first appearance on the Sydney stage with Short Poppy Theatre’s debut production, NOT AT THE DINNER TABLE.

Samantha hails from Gladstone in regional Central Queensland where she attended primary and secondary school. Throughout high school Sam devoted much of her time to her drama studies and formed a strong connection with her drama teacher who inspired Sam to become a teacher herself. With this in mind, in 2010 Sam moved to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Performing Arts at Monash University with the idea of becoming a teacher. It was not until her 3rd year at University where Samantha played the role of Cassandra in The Flayed (Robert Draffin’s adaptation of THE WOMEN OF TROY) that her passion for teaching drama was overtaken by her desire to become an actor.

After graduating from Monash University, Sam accepted a place at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where she continued her acting studies throughout 2013-14. During this time she fell even more in love with the craft of acting. Upon returning to Australia in late 2014, Sam moved to Sydney to pursue her dream of acting. Sam has enjoyed the process of writing and devising with Short Poppy and looks forward to future collaborations!

When it comes to pet peeves at the dinner table, Sam groans: “Maybe it’s just because I’ve worked in hospitality, but I cannot stand it when people are rude to their waiters. Lose the attitude, people! It’s so unnecessary!”

Brit Gorrel as JEMMA

Aged just 21, Brittany recently graduated with a Bachelor of Performance (Acting) with Distinction from the University of Wollongong (UOW). Brittany has been involved with various elements of performance from a young age, competing in Australian National Titles for Physical Culture before pursuing dance training at the age of 5 in jazz, modern and ballet. She was also involved in singing classes and musical theatre and throughout high school took on major roles including Rusty in Footloose (2009) and Mimi Marquez in Rent (2010).

While studying on a scholarship at UOW, Brittany continued
contemporary and classical singing training under the direction of Dr Lotte Latukefu. During her training Brittany premiered the role of ‘Jenny’ in Catherine McKinnon’s Hurt Trilogy, Hurt #2 Tribe. Alongside her performance endeavours, she was given the opportunity to display her talent for costume design and construction in shows such as Metamorphoses. With this love for the visual aspect of theatre, Brittany assisted in the direction and design concept of student initiated production We Wear Red for UOW’s ‘Nothing To See Here’ Festival, 2014. She is thrilled to be performing at PACT again following her role in Teenage Wildlife, a new adaptation of Wedekind’s ‘Spring Awakening’ by Alex Tutton and directed by Chris Ryan.

When it comes to dinner table pet hates, Brit says: “I have a hard time dealing with people chewing and gulping loudly and sucking their fingers. My body literally spasms in agony at the sound! Does that make me a rude dinner guest? Where are my manners? Umm….do you mind if I lick the plate?”

Sarah Furnari as SHELBY

Growing up in the southern suburbs of Sydney, at age 5 Sarah had grand plans of becoming a Vet... until she realised this would involve working with sick animals and the possibility of having to clean up their poo. At age 6, Sarah’s addiction to performing began when she played Gretl in a local production of The Sound of Music. Sarah adored dancing and continued her involvement in community theatre, but her love of acting was truly sparked when she began studying Drama at Caringbah Selective High School. She went on to rank 5th in NSW in HSC Drama and now holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts: Performance from the University of Wollongong, where she was a Creative Arts Scholarship recipient.

In 2014 Sarah was overjoyed to play a dream role, Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, at Riverside Parramatta before jetting over to the US to travel & teach youth drama & theatre at Camp Towanda, Pennsylvania. Travelling is Sarah’s other great love; she’s convinced she “must have been an explorer in a former life”. More recently, Sarah has delighted high school audiences in Greater Western Sydney, the Gold Coast, and rural NSW while touring as a performer with GIBBER Theatre in Education Company.

Of the “forgotten art” of Table Manners, Sarah confesses: “I absolutely detest it when people text at the dinner table – I feel like it’s just the height of rudeness. I mean come on, I’m right here in front of you! Am I so boring that you have to talk to someone else who isn’t even in the room??”
