It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Bill Buckley OAM — a dedicated educator, mentor, and advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student success.

Bill was a valued member of the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research and a much-loved presence across the university. His long-standing commitment to education, cultural exchange, and community uplift was evident in everything he did. With a career spanning continents and decades, Bill brought wisdom, generosity, and deep cultural understanding to his work, making a lasting impact not only at UTS but across the sector.

Throughout his time at Jumbunna, Bill contributed in meaningful and enduring ways — supporting students, sharing knowledge, and strengthening relationships across our community. He was known for his warmth, his gentle humour, and his unwavering belief in the potential of each student he worked with. For many, Bill was not only a teacher or colleague, but a trusted mentor and friend.

In 2010, Bill was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to education and his dedication to mentoring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. His commitment to equity, cultural respect, and educational opportunity has shaped the lives of countless alumni, students, and colleagues.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bill’s wife, his children and grandchildren, and to all who had the privilege of knowing and being taught by him.

Bill's legacy lives on in the students he supported, the colleagues he inspired, and the communities he championed. He will be remembered with great admiration, affection, and gratitude.

A new generation of First Nations researchers is emerging thanks to a philanthropic partnership with Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

Over the next 3 years, ACER looks to support a total of 125 First Nations researchers as they head towards the end of their PhDs.

Beyond the student financial support, ACER and Jumbunna have collaborated on a successful bid for a research grant through the Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success.
