Former University of Sydney professor and eminent legal scholar Emeritus Professor Upendra Baxi Hon LLD has been admitted to the degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) in recognition of his innovative legal scholarship and unwavering commitment to social justice.

Arriving in Australia at just 30, Professor Baxi joined Sydney Law School to teach international law and jurisprudence under the leadership of renowned legal theorist Challis Professor Julius Stone.

His time at Sydney helped shape a lifelong engagement with law as a force for justice. A fearless advocate, Professor Baxi challenged Australia’s lingering colonial attitudes and was among the early voices to speak out against the denial of First Nations land rights.

From witnessing Indian independence and the adoption of the Constitution of India to becoming a globally recognised legal scholar, Professor Baxi’s career reflects the power of scholarship to challenge, question and create change.

We’re proud to honour his extraordinary contribution to law and social justice.

Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones, those awaiting news of family and friends, and the communities facing the immense challenges of this disaster.

We also stand with our long-standing partners and friends at Kathmandu School of Law. For more than a decade, our two institutions have worked closely through the Himalayan Field School, bringing together students and academics to explore human rights, development and the role of law in communities across Nepal.

At this difficult time, we send our solidarity and support to the Kathmandu School of Law community and to the people of Nepal and the surrounding region.
