A University of Sydney PhD student has helped uncover the clearest evidence yet for the source of a mysterious cosmic signal.

Kovi Rose, alongside an international team of astronomers, have identified a rare stellar system that could help astronomers decode similar signals across our galaxy.

The system could also offer a unique natural laboratory for studying extreme physics.

“She proves you can be a brilliant academic, while still being a wonderful human being. I hope I can be a cool professor like her.”

Dr Hong Dao Nguyen from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences received a huge thank you from her students for creating a warm and fun environment in her workshops that make them the “highlight of the week”.

You’re the best, Dr Nguyen. Thank you so much.

When Emily Bobis (BA ’16, MCom ’19, DipLangStud ’21) realised a corporate career wasn’t for her, she launched her own start-up company, while still at university.

Eight years on, she’s leading a 27-person team and helping improve road safety and infrastructure.

Many Gen Z professionals are rethinking what success looks like – prioritising flexibility, purpose and work-life balance over climbing the corporate ladder.

“Follow your passions. Do what you love. If a door opens, don't stand on the threshold, go through it.”

That was Kate McClymont AM’s message to students last week, as the award-winning investigative journalist addressed graduates in the Great Hall after receiving an honorary doctorate from the University.

“As an alumna, Fellow and former Pro-Chancellor, Kate has made a significant contribution to the life of this University. It’s a privilege to recognise her today,” said Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Mark Scott AO.

Have you ever talked about something with a friend… then suddenly seen an ad for it?

Most of us assume our phones are listening. The reality might be stranger.

Companies don’t necessarily need to hear your conversations - they can build surprisingly accurate predictions using search history, clicks, location data, online behaviour, and even patterns from people around you.

Dr Nina Schirrmacher explains why targeted ads feel so creepy, and offers practical steps to protect your privacy.

Were prices really ‘down down’? 🤔

Last week, the Federal Court found that Coles Supermarkets had misled their customers by temporarily increasing prices on some of their products before, placing the same products in their ‘Down Down’ promotion.

The ACCC brought the claim to the Federal Court - and they won. They said Coles’ practices “made it harder for customers to identify genuine value for money”.

Dr Rob Nicholls from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences says this case shows that ACCC is a strong enforcer when it comes to consumer rights.
