Brennan Program Justice Talk #5 2026: Maritime Refugees & Rohingya crossings of the Andaman Sea: A discussion of the documentary “When the Water Horse Seeks a New Home”

October 7th 2026, Online, 6pm-7:15pm

The lives and experiences of maritime refugees remain largely invisible in public discourse, reduced to statistics or crisis headlines. When the Water Horse seeks a New Home restores their voices and humanity. The documentary traces the human story of displacement, loss, and resilience behind Rohingya maritime crossings of the Andaman Sea, and imaginatively reconstructs pivotal experiences before and after their arrival, creating a space between testimony and creative storytelling.

This Justice Talk will involve an online screening of the 26 minute documentary, which we will watch together. After the film, Associate Professor Gerhard Hoffstaedter (UQ) will join us to explain the situation of Rohingya refugees; the process of making the film and his research on refugees who seek protection through travel by boat as part of the Maritime Refugee Lab project. UTS Faculty of Law, in collaboration with Dementia Australia, is launching the Build Dementia Capability in Your Legal Practice 2026 Webinar Series.

The four-part series will explore key issues such as dementia, capacity and supported decision-making, healthcare decision-making and enduring powers of attorney and financial abuse.

Designed for legal practitioners, the series brings together expert legal and health perspectives, alongside the lived experiences of people living with dementia and their supporters.

The series kicks off with Dementia: Facts and Foundations held on 17 September.

Meet Nicholas Stewart, UTS Law graduate and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.

Inspired by his UTS Law academics to find an area of law he was passionate about, Nicholas is now a partner at an LGBTQ+ law firm and President of Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.

From representing LGBTQ+ clients to campaigning for parliamentary inquiries into LGBTQ+ hate crimes, Nicholas is using his legal career to drive meaningful change.

Join us for Dementia: Facts and Foundations, the first webinar in a new series from the UTS Faculty of Law in collaboration with Dementia Australia. Featuring Professor Nola Ries, UTS Faculty of Law Professor and other leading experts from Dementia Australia and the dementia sector.

On Thursday, we celebrated the launch of Professor Ramona Vijeyarasa’s (middle) major new program of work as Chair in Gender and the Law, generously supported by the Minderoo Foundation.

The program will explore how the law can be a powerful tool for advancing gender equality; from evaluating the gender-responsiveness of laws globally, to examining the gendered impacts of AI and driving advocacy for gender-responsive law reform.

It was a lovely morning celebrating this important work with staff over morning tea. ☕️💜
