Coptic Studies at Macquarie University In 2015, Macquarie University celebrates ten years of Coptic Studies. Join us for a celebration event on Sunday 25th October, 3-5 pm, in Y3A T1.

In 2015, we celebrate ten years since Heike Behlmer (now Professor and head of the Institute for Egyptology and Coptology at the University of Göttingen) was appointed with the support of Australia’s own Coptic community to begin Macquarie University’s program in Coptic Studies, the study of the Coptic language, and of the literature, religion, and culture of Egypt in the first millennium CE. With

its existing research and teaching strengths in Egyptology, Late Antiquity, Papyrology, and Early Christian Studies, Macquarie University is the ideal environment for Coptic Studies, which lies at the inter¬sect¬ion of these fields. In the past decade, there has been significant successes in the teaching, research, and outreach programs in Coptic Studies, forging an international reputation in the field. Significant publications and external funding has underlined the research strengths of the field. A host of students have completed Masters, Bachelors, and Higher Degree research programs of study. Graduates of the programs have gone on to be research fellows at overseas universities, PhD candidates (at Macquarie and overseas), and into a wide range of professions outside academia. Our relationship with the Coptic community of Sydney and Australia has continued to grow. Ten years after our beginning, we thank you all for your support, and look forward to the next decade of Coptic Studies at Macquarie University.

A giant of Coptic archaeology has passed away. RIP Peter Grossmann.

Tief betroffen teilen wir mit, dass Dr. Peter Grossmann am 14. Oktober verstorben ist.

Peter Grossmann wurde 1933 in Potsdam geboren. Nach einem Studium der Architektur an der Universität Karlsruhe wurde er 1970 im Fachgebiet Architekturgeschichte promoviert. Zwischen 1962 und 1965 war er als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Deutschen Archäologischen Institut an den Abteilungen Rom und Athen tätig; 1964 erhielt er das Reisestipendium des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. Von 1965 bis 1998 wirkte er als Wissenschaftlicher Referent für Bauforschung und Christliche Archäologie am Deutschen Archäologischen Institut Kairo; er blieb jedoch auch im Ruhestand in der Feldforschung an zahlreichen archäologischen Plätzen in Ägypten aktiv.

Durch seine Ausgrabungen und bauforscherischen Aufnahmen prägte Peter Grossmann die Christliche Archäologie insbesondere in Ägypten nachhaltig. Vor allem seine Forschungen in Abu Mena schufen die maßgebliche archäologische Dokumentation für diesen zentralen Platz des christlichen Ägypten. Sein umfangreiches schriftliches Werk erschließt das vielfältige Erbe des spätantiken Ägypten an maßgeblichen Stätten im ganzen Land. Als übergreifende Synthese ragt sein Handbuch der Christlichen Architektur in Ägypten heraus (HdO I.62, 2002).

Die Abteilung Kairo des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts betrauert mit zahlreichen Forscherinnen und Forschern weltweit den Verlust eines außerordentlichen Gelehrten, eines bewunderten Kollegen und herzlich geschätzten Menschen.

For a chance to hear Carrie Schroeder of the University of the Pacific talk about her work on Coptic Digital Humanities, come along at 1 pm on Monday July 16 to Macquarie University, Australian Hearing Hub Level 5 Seminar room, AH 5.212. All welcome!

On Monday July 16 at 1 pm in the Australian Hearing Hub 5th floor Seminar room, AHH 5.212, at Macquarie University, Carrie Schroeder, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of the Pacific, California, will present a paper on "Coptic Studies in the Digital Age", in which she will talk about the
online platform she co-founded with collaborator Dr. Amir Zeldes of Georgetown University, Coptic Scriptorium (http://copticscriptorium.org), and the use of technology for the study of Coptic language and literature. Hi all,
Just a friendly reminder that enrolment for the 2018 Summer Macquarie Ancient Language School is currently open, and the cut-off date for the early-bird discount is Monday December 4th. The school runs from the 8th to the 12th of January.
Once again I will be running the Beginners Coptic course. The course covers much of the easier grammar taught in the university’s Coptic A and B units, focusing mainly on Sahidic but also with a session on Bohairic, showing the main differences between these two dialects. In class exercises are drawn from Biblical and other literary material, and some non-literary material.
I’d like to encourage anyone interested to join, or to pass on the details to anyone you know who might be interested. Coptic generally receives lower numbers of enrolments than other languages, and it is vital that we continue to support the teaching and study of this language, history, and culture and Macquarie.
