University of Queensland Exercise Physiology student Peter recently completed an eight-week clinical placement with the SQRH St George Clinic — and made a lasting impact both in the clinic and the community.

During his placement, Peter generously volunteered with the Rotary Club of St George across several local events, helping with everything from transporting gear and working the BBQ at the St George Show to assisting with recycling container shuttles at the local Tourist Park.

Rotary Club President Win Salmon praised Peter’s enthusiasm and willingness to get involved, describing his volunteering spirit as “much admired” within the community.

To recognise his contribution, Win and Terry Salmon presented Peter with a Certificate of Appreciation for his outstanding community support.

We’re proud to see our students embracing place-based learning and becoming valued members of the communities they serve. 💚

Health and Wellness Clinic Toowoomba Exercise Physiology students Luke (UniSC) and Catherine (UQ), and Physiotherapy students Jaide and Liam (UQ) welcomed new Dietetics students Annabelle and Eva (UQ) on placement.

The students will work collaboratively to support program participants to improve their health and wellbeing, reduce risk for chronic disease and improve overall strength and balance.

The clinic programs deliver sessions focusing on nutrition, exercise, social connection and behaviour change. What a great student opportunity to experience interprofessional practice.

Welcome, Annabelle and Eva, to the team!

SQRH collaborative research publication alert.

When eggs in the same basket are apples and oranges: length of stay for public sector allied health professionals in regional, rural and remote southern Queensland, 2010–2021

Despite recognition that the term ‘allied health’ encompasses disparate professions (differing markedly in their background, training, scope of practice and client populations), evidence related to retaining the allied health workforce in regional, rural and remote areas often treats these professions as a homogeneous group.

Grouping allied health professions together risks missing professions and/or geographic differences that could be targeted for the development of specific retention strategies. This Original Research study assesses the retention patterns of different allied health professionals employed in regional, rural and remote regions of Southern Queensland.

Empowered Nurses Save Lives'

On Tuesday, 12th May 2026, the world celebrates the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. On this day, SQRH acknowledges their amazing nursing team, who collectively have dedicated 232 years to this most trusted profession.

The SQRH Nurses (Mel - SQRH Director; Flora - Deputy Director South West; Dayle - CE Nursing & Clinics Coordinator; Colleen - CE Nursing; Adeline - CE Nursing; Telia - CE Midwifery; Renae - CE Indigenous Health and Christie-Anne - CE Nursing) continue to work to retain and grow the rural nursing workforce, strengthen education pathways and elevate the nursing voice.

SQRH Charleville recently held a Student Engagement Games Night for our wonderful group currently on their placements.

The students were in 2 teams and competed strongly with the Blue Team coming out on top for BOTH games!

That didn't stop our Red Team member, Christina, who was just happy to be decked out in SQRH merch.

A big thanks to everyone who came to join in on the fun!

Celebrating One Million More Midwives on 2026’s International Day of the Midwife.

Supporting one of these students, we acknowledge Poppy and the Charleville community, who embraced her. Poppy is a final-year UQ Midwifery student who has recently completed an 8-week placement at Charleville Hospital. In her words, the midwifery team in Charleville were incredible, and the care they provided was very much aligned with midwifery philosophy and supporting normal birth. The team conducted home visits for postnatal care and travelled to surrounding towns for outreach antenatal and postnatal clinics, which added a unique and rewarding dimension.

Poppy also embraced the social aspect of rural placements, both with the local community and the interprofessional students she met. She found herself going to trivia on Wednesdays and playing bowls every Thursday night, which quickly became the highlight of her week.

Great night of pizza and games enjoyed by all students who attended. Students on placement in St George joined with local Country University Centre students for a night of fun.
Students were studying Dentistry, Exercise Physiology, Nursing, Education and Physiotherapy.

Board games, pizza, and great company made for a fantastic recent student engagement event. Students had the chance to unwind, have some fun, and connect with other students in Toowoomba.

These moments of social connection play such an important role in building confidence, community, and peer support while on placement, and there was plenty of laughter and inside jokes created throughout the night!
