Dr Nadine Levy (Head of Program for Health and Social Wellbeing and Applied Mindfulness) has recently published her latest Guardian article, which discusses and reflects on beliefs - how they can change over time, how we can change with them, and what can happen if we don’t change.

“Even the most skilful views can, when clung to, become limiting.”

When held with curiosity, beliefs can be productive, creative and alive. But they can also imprison us, closing down life itself

At NTI, we continue to celebrate the Humanistic Buddhism Centre’s 10th anniversary!

The HBC is essential to the research and development of Humanistic Buddhism in Australia, continuing Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s aspiration of combining modern Australian scholarship with Buddhist traditions and practices.

“From Aspiration to Impact” tells the story of HBC’s first decade, from its founding within Nan Tien Institute to its research presentations and publications, as well as the esteemed members of the Advisory Committee that support it.

The “10th Anniversary Documentary” is a visual encapsulation of HBC’s journey, tracing how the HBC honours the Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s vision for the Dharma to travel across the world - from the roots planted at Nan Tien Institute to the blossoming of a vibrant research and education hub.

Western Thought meets Buddhism - Presented by Dr Peter OIdmeadow

May 13 2026, 12pm - 1:15pm (AEST) - Event will be held online via Zoom

This conversation will reflect on resonances and influences in the meeting of Western thought and Buddhism with special attention to some streams of 19th century thought which contributed to creating an intellectual environment receptive to the introduction of Buddhism in the modern West and which influenced the development of modern Buddhism.

Exploring these significant currents in modern Western thought and Buddhism and reflecting on the history of ideas that influence our societies, cultures and world views, can help to deepen our understanding of ourselves and of Buddhism in its many forms in Asia and in the West.

Prior to retirement, Dr Peter Oldmeadow was head of the Classical Indian and Buddhist Studies programs at the University of Sydney. He is also the author of Going Beyond: Western Thought Meets Buddhism (Platform Books, 2025). Peter is the current Chair of the Program Advisory Committee for Applied Buddhist Studies and Humanistic Buddhism at Nan Tien Institute.

Tickets are free, but registration is essential. Please reserve your ticket here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/western-thought-meets-buddhism-tickets-1987880928369?aff=oddtdtcreator

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” - Robert Laurence Binyon (1914)

Lest we forget.
