Today is RUOK? Day, It's our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life. The UOW Student Advisory Council is proud to support this important day and we encourage our members and broader student community to check in with each other and have a chat.
You don't have to be an expert to reach out and make a difference- just a good friend and great listener.
These simple 4 steps could change a life:
1. Ask R U OK?
2. Listen
3. Encourage action
4. Check in

Happy Wear It Purple Day! The UOW Student Advisory Council is proud to support LGBTIQ+ Young People. Our members will be wearing purple today and living out this year's theme of "Start the Conversation- Keep it Going", which is all about focusing on conversations we have in our daily lives about gender and sexuality and how we can be ally's. In celebrating today, we'd love to share Aurora's story, and her experience as the SAC's LGBTIQ+ representative: https://www.uow.edu.au/media/2021/i-carry-my-identity-in-every-space-at-uow.php

As Wollongong students, we demand change.

'Code Red’: It’s now or never: rising sea levels, longer fire seasons, and severe droughts are placing the environment in imminent danger, and human-induced global warming is to blame. The August 9 IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report emphasised the urgent need for action.

Take a stand against climate change to ensure a livable world for future generations. Endorse the University of Wollongong’s commitments to a sustainable future and demands for climate action on a local, national, and global scale.

A team of students and staff working in collaboration with the University of Wollongong (UOW) are participating in the 16th Conference of Youth on Climate Change (COY16), which is the precursor to the UN 26th Conference of Parties (COP26). As part of the conference, our team has developed a Youth Climate Statement in consultation with students, academics, and members of Wollongong’s wider community. The statement establishes a set of climate change commitments of the University, as well as demands on a local, national, and global level. These commitments and demands will be presented as a part of COY’s statement to the UN Climate Change Conference of Parties in Glasgow on the 31st of October-12th November 2021.

Are you passionate about the environment? Do you want to make a real change to university and government climate response?

The University of Wollongong Student Advisory Council is undertaking climate change project for the COY16 UN Youth Climate Change Conference.

We are looking to make a series of climate change commitments for UOW’s endorsement. Part of this is having a diverse and knowledgeable project team, undertaking extensive consultation to ensure our statement reflects student, staff, and the broader university’s perspective.

We would love to hear your perspective as students into what is such an important issue. We’ll be running virtual discussion groups that you can join. Some focused questions that may be helpful in preparing for the discussion groups include:

What do you see as being the biggest priorities for the University of Wollongong’s commitment to sustainability and climate change?
What do you feel are the biggest climate related issues facing the Wollongong community?
What do you feel are the biggest climate related issues facing Australia?
What do you see as the biggest priorities in the global fight against climate change?

The discussion groups will take place on Wednesday the 11th of August over three times over WebEx, with links included below:

COY16 UN Student Discussion Group #1 (Wednesday 11 August 10.00am-10.30am)
COY16 UN Student Discussion Group #2 (Wednesday 11 August 12.00pm- 12.30pm)
COY16 UN Student Discussion Group #3 (Wednesday 11 August 3.00pm-3.30pm)

Students are welcome to attend whichever groups work best and will be joined by other student groups at the university with a focus on climate change and sustainability. To register to attend, please message the UOW Student Advisory Council page, and further information will be provided.

Further consultations with University staff will occur on Thursday 13 August and consultation with community groups will occur on Friday 12 August. If you are in one of these groups and are interesting in joining the discussion, please contact our page for more details.

We hope to see you at our virtual discussion groups!

Warm regards,
COY16 Climate Change Project Executive
