What do children, young people and families need to thrive in the Shellharbour region?

A new report from UOW Early Start Discovery Space, commissioned by Barnardos Australia, has given more than 250 local children, young people, parents, educators, Aboriginal leaders and service providers the opportunity to have their say.

The findings highlight the importance of affordable activities, safe youth spaces, accessible mental health support and strong community connections as the area continues to grow.

For Emily Spence, a fourth-year Materials Engineering student at UOW, the BlueScope Australia Cadetship has provided more than workplace experience.

As a third-generation BlueScope employee, Emily joined the cadetship while studying engineering and has worked across multiple departments.

She has developed practical skills in project delivery, collaboration and problem solving, while building relationships with mentors and colleagues.

"What I have learned through practical workplace experience goes far beyond technical skills. Working across different teams has helped me understand the many pathways available within engineering and the type of engineer I want to become."

Emily says one piece of advice consistently shared by mentors throughout her journey has been simple: stay curious.

"By asking loads of questions and getting involved in anything and everything you can, you absorb and learn huge amounts that you may not even realise until much later."

Do you want to see your child's school return to "pen-and-paper learning"?

Experts, led by UOW's Dr Karley Beckman and Associate Professor Tiffani Apps, are urging governments to focus on quality screen use, not screen time, in schools.

"The conversation right now is about screen time, but what actually matters for learning isn't how many minutes a student spends looking at a screen but what they're doing with it, why, and with whom," Dr Beckman said.

“Nobody's arguing that kids should be on devices all day, every day. The real questions are about the quality of education technologies we use in our schools..." said Professor Apps.

The proceeds will support Visual Arts and Design graduates to present their works nationally.

Over the weekend, high school students came together at UOW for PECAN+ Capture the Flag 2026, taking on real-world cyber security challenges in cryptography, digital forensics, ethical hacking, open-source intelligence and more. 💻🔐

From first-time competitors learning the ropes at Saturday's training day to experienced teams tackling advanced challenges on competition day, students put their problem-solving, teamwork and technical skills to the test in a fun and supportive environment.

PECAN+ continues to inspire the next generation of cyber security talent through hands-on learning and friendly competition. 👏

New cancer imaging technology developed by UOW researchers, that could improve how doctors see tumours during radiotherapy, has secured $1.26 million in funding from the Australian Government. 🎉

"Because our detector is more efficient, we can deliver less imaging dose and avoid additional radiation, which is particularly beneficial for paediatric patients,” said UOW's Associate Professor Saree Alnaghy.

Over the weekend Hack the Gong 2026 brought together coders, creatives, builders and big thinkers for 30 hours of innovation, collaboration and problem-solving at iAccelerate.

Teams worked around the clock to tackle real-world challenges, develop new ideas and pitch innovative solutions, all while making new connections and learning from industry experts along the way.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, mentored, judged and supported the event. Congratulations to all participants for taking on the challenge and bringing their ideas to life. 👏
