Southern University Bangladesh is located Arefin nagor, Bayzid Bostami, Chattogram, Bangladesh. Southern Started its Journey as an Institute in the year 1998, November 26, 2002 the Institute transformed to the University and got approval from Ministry of Education as a charitable, non-profit, non-commercial and non-political organization in Chattogram and governed by AJ Foundation. 006 initiator & founder of the Southern University Mr. Sarwar Jahan expand membership for the development of the University and AJ Foundation was renamed as the Southern University Foundation. Sarwar Jahans dream to set up an university for underprivileged people who cannot enter in Public University nor can afford Private University of the country. Sarwar Jahan & Dr. Ishrat Jahan's dedication, tireless efforts and hard work paved the way for approval of the establishment of Southern under the Private University Act -1992 (now repealed by -2010), approved the establishment of Southern University Bangladesh. The University was formally inaugurated on 14 January 2003 and was started its journey in a very modest way. As per the Private University Act 2010 and as instructed by the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission(UGC), in 2013, the Southern University Foundation transferred to Southern University Bangladesh Trust(SUBT). The board of trust (BoT) is the apex policy making and approving body of the University. Al-haj Khalilur Rahman is the current Chairman of the BoT.He is the President of Chittagong Metropoliton Chamber of commerce (CMCC) and Chairman of the KDS Group, The other members of the BoT are Professor Sarwar Jahan, Professor Dr. Ishrat Jahan, Mr. Liakat Ali Chowdhury, Alhaj Shafiq Uddin , Mr. Nurul Abser, Mr. Abdus Salam(Mir),Prof. Kamal Uddin, Mr. Saifuzaman Chowdhury(Zaved), Mr. Mamun Salam, Mr. Ferdous Khan Alamgir, Mr. Abdus Salam, Mr. Ferdous Wahid(Bappi). The Vice-Chancellor, is the Ex-Officio Member of the BoT. The Syndicate is the next to the BoT and is headed by the Vice-Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the University. He is responsible for managing the administrative and academic affairs of the university as per the Private University Act 2010, and implementing the policy guidelines set by the BoT. The Vice-Chancellor is assisted by a Pro Vice-Chancellor and a Treasurer. All of them are appointed by the Honorable Chancellor on recommendation of the BoT. The honorable President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of Southern University Bangladesh. Renowned academicians were the Vice-Chancellor of Southern University Bangladesh. Professor Dr. Moin-ud-Din Ahmad Khan was first Vice-Chancellor(2002-2006), He was first Director General of Islamic Foundation. Professor A.J.M.Nuruddin Chowdhury was second Vice-Chancellor(2006-2010) and former Vice-Chancellor of CU; Professor Mohammed Ali was third Vice-Chancellor(2010-2016), he was the only Vice-Chancellor who served four University as Vice-Chancellor including Chittagong University. Professor. Dr. Nurul Mostafa(2016-2021) was the fourth Vice-Chancellor. Curricula of the University were duly approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, the highest controlling authority on higher education of the country. The university is delivering a substantial general education curriculum, has a Strategic Plan, and has initiated and implemented student instructional learning assessment for degree programs and courses and is in the process of developing the infrastructure for evaluation of institutional effectiveness for its institutional accreditation.

On the occasion of the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare, the English literary Club of Southern University Bangladesh organized an event titled “William Shakespeare: His Words, Wit & Wonder.”

The event, held at the university gallery, featured speeches by the Honorable Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sharif Ashrafuzzaman, Registrar A F M Moddasser Ali, Dean Professor Chowdhury Mohammad Ali, and Head of the Department Arman Hossain as Chief Guest and Special Guests.

On 23 April 2026, the 42nd Academic Council Meeting of Southern University Bangladesh was held in the university’s conference room.

The meeting was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Sharif Ashrafuzzaman and presented by the Member Secretary, Registrar A F M Moddasser Ali.

All members of the Academic Council were present. Honorable members of the Board of Trustees were also in attendance, including the Chairman of Clifton Group, Professor M. Kamal Uddin and the Member Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Professor Sarwar Jahan.

EEE students Testimony

I am pleased to share my experience as a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) from Southern University Bangladesh. My academic journey at Southern University provided me with a strong foundation in engineering principles, practical problem-solving skills, and a solid understanding of modern electrical systems.

The curriculum was well-structured and aligned with international engineering standards, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratory work and real-world applications. The faculty members were supportive, knowledgeable, and committed to helping students develop both technical competence and professional confidence.

A significant milestone in my career was obtaining a positive skills assessment from Engineers Australia based on my bachelor’s degree from Southern University Bangladesh. This recognition reflects the quality and standard of education provided by the university, as it meets the criteria required for professional engineering qualifications in Australia.

Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Wollongong, Australia. The strong academic foundation I gained during my undergraduate studies has been instrumental in helping me adapt to advanced coursework and research at an international level.

I highly recommend Southern University Bangladesh to prospective students seeking a comprehensive and internationally recognized engineering education. The program not only prepares students for professional success but also opens doors to global opportunities.
