Round Table Discussion on "The Power of Women: From the Uprising to Greater Political Participation"

Department: General Education Program (GED)

The Department of General Education (GED) facilitated student participation in a round table discussion hosted by Dhaka Tribune titled "The Power of Women: From the Uprising to Greater Political Participation." The event took place on Sunday, March 9, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the Six Seasons Hotel, Gulshan-2, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

During the discussion, ULAB sent five student representatives from GED—Sadia Tarannum, Sabrina Mostofa, Md. Rezanul Islam Raz, Mahmudul Hasan Sumon, and Md. Kawsar Ahmed Hamim—who actively participated in the Q&A session, engaging with experts on women’s political participation and empowerment.

Sadia Tarannum raised concerns about women’s safety and justice in Bangladesh. She questioned how women can enter politics when criminals walk free and victims are denied justice. She stressed that empowerment discussions are pointless without safety, justice, and accountability. She also pointed out that without action, such discussions waste time, as the lack of rule of law allows rapists to roam free while victims remain unheard. Her stance sparked important conversations among the panelists and audience.

The discussion was graced by special guest Dr. Rounaq Jahan, while H.E. Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen, Ambassador of Norway to Bangladesh, was also present. The ULAB students interacted with H.E. Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen and other distinguished guests, concluding with a group photo session alongside participants and panelists.

The event shed light on the challenges women face in achieving true empowerment and political representation in Bangladesh. ULAB’s participation, particularly the insights shared by Sadia Tarannum, contributed to the discourse on ensuring justice and safety for women as prerequisites for leadership and political engagement.

From February 20–22, 2025, 29 students of the Spring 2025 “Globalization” course (SSC 2146) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), led by Dr. Ahmed Abid, conducted a field trip to Jorakhal, Rajapur, Bhola. The purpose was to study the climate resilience and everyday challenges of the Manta (Bede) fisherfolk community. The trip was supported by the General Education Department (GED), Centre for Qualitative & Critical Studies (CQS), and partner organization JAGO NARI, with additional guidance from experts Dr. M. Asaduzzaman, Lucy Tripti Gomes, and Jakir Hossain.

The students engaged directly with around 24 families, conducting interviews and observations on issues such as health, sanitation, education access, and the effects of climate change. A large community consultation involving 120 families was also organized, leading to a consensus on establishing a pre-primary school for Manta children.

This research-focused visit was part of a larger CQS project supported by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs (MoCA), aiming to promote inclusive development through education, policy awareness, and climate action. The student groups are now preparing final research presentations based on the data collected.

Here are the relevant SDG numbers included in this initiative:

✅ SDG 1: No Poverty

The trip included gender-focused researchers, and the role of women in education and resilience was highlighted.

✅ SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
Access to safe drinking water was identified as a major community need and discussed in the consultation.

✅ SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
The project worked to highlight the social marginalization of the Manta/Bede community and promote inclusive development.

✅ SDG 13: Climate Action
The trip directly addressed climate change impacts on fisherfolk livelihoods and community adaptation mechanisms.

✅ SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
The project was a collaborative effort among ULAB, CQS, JAGO NARI, Lokojog, and supported by MoCA — demonstrating multi-stakeholder partnership for sustainable development.

Kazi Shahid Ahmed, passed away on Monday evening at 7:15 pm. He lived many lives in one as a soldier, builder and a defiant voice in media and politics. He was a founding officer of the Bangladesh Military Academy, and a major actor behind many progressive political movements of the 1990s. He changed Bangladesh print media culture with Ajker Kagoj. Founded the country’s only organic tea estate. And a liberal arts university. Above all, he was a man of great passion, integrity and unparalleled courage. He was a loving father and a patron or mentor to countless others. Ever an optimist, he always believed in Bangladesh and its future. He was a major patron of sports and culture. And one of the wittiest and most fun-loving persons. We will miss him terribly. But above all, his is a tale of inspiration, a life to be celebrated.
