A Message That Inspires Me to Keep Teaching Languages

A message from a former Chinese learner whom I had not heard from for a long time:

Assalamu Alaikum, Laoshi,

I am ??, wife of Lt. Col. ???. Before leaving for China to pursue my PhD, I used to learn Chinese from you. I hope you still remember me!

I am currently visiting Bangladesh, and my husband is posted as the Commanding Officer of ?? in ??. We would be very happy if you could visit us whenever you have time. It would be wonderful to meet you again after such a long time. Take care, and I hope to see you soon!

A personal reflection

Over the years, a few thousand former learners have passed through my Chinese-language classes. Some remember me and reconnect after many years, while others may be too busy with their own lives to look back on the past. That is only natural.

Yet, sometimes, a single message like this carries far more inspiration than its actual words. It reminds me that teaching is not merely about lessons, textbooks, or language proficiency; it is also about the people we meet, the relationships we build, and the memories we leave behind.

Such messages inspire me to continue teaching Chinese, spoken English, and Bengali to more and more people, regardless of their age, profession, or background.

Teaching languages matters! Learning a new language matters even more!

Every language we learn opens a new window to the world, brings people closer, and creates connections that may last a lifetime.

অক্টোবর ১৫, সিএমজি বাংলা ডেস্ক: চীনের থিয়ানচিনে অনুষ্ঠেয় ‘বিশ্ব কারিগরি ও বৃত্তিমূলক শিক্ষা উন্নয়ন সম্মেলন ২০২৬’-এ অংশ নিচ্ছেন বাংলাদেশের শিক্ষা এবং প্রাথমিক ও গণশিক্ষামন্ত্রী ড. আ ন ম এহছানুল হক মিলন। এ ছাড়া ‘বিশ্ব বৃত্তিমূলক কলেজ দক্ষতা প্রতিযোগিতা ২০২৬’-এর চূড়ান্ত পর্বেও অতিথি হিসেবে তার উপস্থিত থাকার কথা রয়েছে।

এ উপলক্ষে তিন দিনের সফরে গতকাল বুধবার চীন গেছেন শিক্ষামন্ত্রী। বাংলাদেশে নিযুক্ত চীনা দূতাবাসের সাংস্কৃতিক কাউন্সিলর লি শাওফেং বিমানবন্দরে তাকে বিদায় জানান।

সফরকালে শিক্ষাক্ষেত্রে সহযোগিতা বাড়াতে চীনের সংশ্লিষ্ট পক্ষের সঙ্গে দ্বিপক্ষীয় বৈঠক করবেন মন্ত্রী। এসময় দুই দেশের মধ্যে সমঝোতা স্মারক স্বাক্ষরেরও কথা রয়েছে।

বাংলাদেশের শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয় থেকে বুধবার গণমাধ্যমে পাঠানো এক বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এ সব তথ্য জানানো হয়।
