বিশ্বের অন্যতম প্রভাবশালী সংগঠন IEEE, প্রতিবছর IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Masters Student Fellowship প্রদান করে থাকে, যা অর্জন করা যেকোন EEE পড়ুয়া শিক্ষার্থীর জন্য যেন স্বপ্নকে জয় করার মতোই।

২০২৪ ও ২০২৫ সালে টানা দুইবছর ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Masters Fellowship অর্জন করে নিয়েছেন নাজমুল হাসান নাঈম ও আফসানা আনজুম আঁখি।

আফসানা আনজুম আঁখি শুধুমাত্র বাংলাদেশ থেকেই নয়, বরং পুরো সাউথইস্ট এশিয়ার মধ্যে প্রথম নারী, যিনি এই সম্মাননা অর্জন করে নিয়েছেন।

IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Masters Fellowship বহুধাপ পেরিয়ে অর্জন করে নিতে হয়। আবেদনকারীর device সম্পর্কিত গবেষণা, সুপারিশ, নেতৃত্বগুণ, এবং বিশ্বব্যাপি electron device কমিউনিটিতে উল্লেখযোগ্য অবদান ও অবদানের সম্ভাবনা, সবকিছু বিবেচনা করে সারাবিশ্ব থেকে মাত্র কয়েকজনকে Masters Fellowship, IEEE থেকে দেওয়া হয়ে থাকে।

২০২৫ সালে মাত্র ২জনকে এই Masters Fellowship দেওয়া হয়েছে সারাবিশ্ব থেকে। আফসানা আনজুমের সাথে এবার বিশ্বখ্যাত University of Texas Austin এর শিক্ষার্থী Vivek Tallavajhula অর্জন করে নিয়েছেন এই স্থান।

২০২৪ সালেও মাত্র ৩জনকে এই Fellowship প্রদান করা হয়, যেখানে বিশ্বখ্যাত সব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থীকে পিছে ফেলে জায়গা করে নিয়েছিলেন আরেকজন ঢাবিয়ান, নাজমুল হাসান নাঈম।

টানা দুইবার ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে IEEE EDS Masters Student Fellowship অর্জন শুধু তাদের ব্যাক্তিগত অর্জনই নয়, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মর্যাদা আরও বাড়িয়ে দিয়েছেন এর মাধ্যমে। বাংলাদেশের সেমিকন্ডাক্টর শিল্প খুব বেশী বিকাশিত না হলেও, সেমিকন্ডাক্টর নিয়ে গবেষনা করে চলেছেন প্রতিনিয়ত অসংখ্য শিক্ষার্থী, প্রমাণ করে চলেছেন নিজেদের মেধা, পরিশ্রমকে।

DU student wins prestigious IEEE EDS Masters Fellowship

Afsana Anjum Akhi, a Master’s student of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of the University of Dhaka (DU) has been awarded the prestigious IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Masters Fellowship 2025 for outstanding academic excellence and research achievements.

She has made history by becoming the first-ever female student from Bangladesh and Southeast Asia to receive this global honor. Since its inception in 2007, the IEEE EDS Masters Fellowship has been presented annually to promote, recognize, and support graduate-level study and research in the field of electron devices.

The IEEE EDS Fellowship recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional research ability, active involvement in supervised research projects, and a proven record of academic distinction in engineering. This year, only two Master’s students worldwide received the award — Afsana Anjum Akhi from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Vivek Tallavajhula from the University of Texas at Austin, USA. Both were elected through a highly competitive global process for their remarkable academic records and potential to make meaningful contributions in the field.

Supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Mainul Hossain of DU EEE Department, Afsana’s research focuses on understanding the electrical behavior of ultra-low-power and steep-switching III-V devices at the nanoscale through TCAD simulations. In addition, she is developing numerical models for FET-based sensors using novel two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Chairman of DU EEE Department congratulated Afsana Anjum Akhi for her outstanding achievement. They said, this remarkable accomplishment marks a significant milestone for Bangladesh, underscoring the nation’s growing presence and potential in the global semiconductor research arena. The University of Dhaka along with the Department of EEE and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, takes immense pride in Afsana’s success, they added. A milestone that not only brings international recognition to the institution but also inspires young researchers, particularly women in STEM, across Bangladesh to pursue excellence in advanced scientific research and innovation shaping the future of semiconductor technology, they mentioned.
