The global demand for Pharmacy Graduates in the academic and research institutions, pharmaceutical industries, hospitals and other health related institutions is increasing in rapid pace at both home and abroad. Keeping this in mind the Department of Pharmacy was established in East West University in 2003 with only 41 students and 4 faculties. Soon after its inception the Department of Pharmacy b

ecame one of the best institutions not only in East West University, it gained its reputation throughout the country. The faculties are highly qualified, young, energetic and efficient, mostly graduated from well reputed universities including the University of Dhaka. Most of our teachers have PhD degrees and many publications published in different national and international journals. An American Scientist and Scholar named Edward Organ has been working as Associate Professor in our department. Pharm is a 4 year program consisting of 8 semesters and the students require to complete 158 credits. We are producing skilled and efficient manpower to serve pharmaceutical companies, retail pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, community pharmacies and other government bodies related to health and research. The facilities for lab and research works in our department are worth mentioning. We have very rare, costly and useful instruments and apparatus in our labs. A modern research lab containing very costly instruments for advanced research is now under construction. We expect within a short time the lab will be ready for use. The library of East West University has a very rich collection of more than 20 thousand brand new books and 7thousand online journals. There are more than 400 books, a good number of on-line journal access related to pharmacy. The Department of Pharmacy of East West University has been accredited by the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh in 2007. The Department acquired this status as it satisfied all the requirements set by the council. Recently we have applied to the relevant authorities for the approval of our newly proposed M.Pharm Program in Clinical Pharmacy and Molecular Pharmacology. If we can start the M.Pharm program in our set time frame, our department will be converted to a full fledged, self-sufficient and well recognized institution.

Thalidomide tragedy – A very well-known scandal in the field of Pharmacy and medicine. It destroyed a whole generation by leaving them dead or with the life time disabilities. In 1953 the drug was marketed as antiemetic by the Chemie Grünenthal, a German Company although this drug initially was used as a sedative. The drug was declared as “wonder Drug”. By 1960 this drug was sold over 46 countries as the treatment of morning sickness among pregnant women. It was found that miraculously by the Australian obstetrician Dr. William McBride that this drug can alleviate the morning sickness of pregnant women. It became so popular within some days and the safety trial for this effect remains unexecuted.
However, it caused thousands of babies worldwide to be born with malformed limbs which is scientifically known as “phocomelia” A German newspaper soon reported 161 babies were adversely affected by thalidomide, leading the makers of the drug—who had ignored reports of the birth defects associated with it—to finally stop distribution within Germany. Other countries followed suit and, by March of 1962, the drug was banned in most countries where it was previously sold. After this tragedy the FDA became stricter about the safety, efficacy and clinical trial of the drug to ensure its safety. Now, drug approval can take between eight and twelve years, involving animal testing and tightly regulated human clinical trials.
Despite its harmful side effects, thalidomide is FDA-approved for two uses today—the treatment of inflammation associated with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) and as a chemotherapeutic agent for patients with multiple myeloma. Because of its known adverse effects on fetal development, the dispensing of thalidomide is regulated by the System for Thalidomide Education and Prescribing Safety (S.T.E.P.S.) program. The S.T.E.P.S. program, designed by Celgene pharmaceuticals and carried out in pharmacies where thalidomide prescriptions are filled, educates all patients who receive thalidomide about potential risks associated with the drug.

Don't forget that computers start counting things from zero!

08/02/2015

Computers are, effectively, lumps of sand and metal. They don't know much about the world. They don't understand words or symbols or letters. They do, however, know how to count. As far as a computer is concerned, everything is a number, and every character, albeit a letter or a symbol, is represented by a number in a sequence. This is called a 'character set', and the character set that computers predominantly use these days is called the 'ASCII' sequence.

Many enthusiastic and talented young students are keen to do research on various topics in the fields of applied biological sciences. But they do not get appropriate platform to carry out their work. Also these students often do not get any proper guidance for conducting research and developing themselves on their respected fields. With the proper training and guidance these potential geniuses can be a big asset for us.
So RISBS was established to flourish their talent by giving them proper training, guidance and platform to do research on their respected fields. This Organization works with different university’s students who are mentored by many internationally renowned scientists and professors. These students came from different sections of biological science like pharmacy, biotechnology and medical science.
One of the major aims of establishing RISBS was to share information and be connected to other international organizations similar to RISBS. Counseling will be provided to members for career and higher studies in abroad.
