The Department of Political Science & Sociology (PSS) aspires to be the hub of excellence in cutting-edge research and transmission of knowledge in social sciences for producing globally competent citizens. All undergraduate students at NSU are required to complete 6 credits in liberal arts and social sciences, which are facilitated by the Department of Political Science and Sociology (PSS) depart
ment. This department is responsible for the development of course content, administration of examinations, and publication of grades. Looking ahead, the PSS department anticipates the introduction of minors and double majors across one or more disciplines within the liberal arts and social sciences. The PSS is an offshoot of the Department of General & Continuing Education (GCE), which was established in 1997 to offer General Education Courses (GEd) courses in Social Sciences and Liberal Arts. The Department underwent several rounds of reorganizations. PSS department is currently in the process of offering an applied undergraduate program titled โBachelor of Social Sciences (BSS)'. The program will offer four majors: 1) Politics and Governance 2) Sociology and Anthropology 3) International Studies, and 4) Media and Communication Studies. The career opportunity for BSS graduate will include but not limited to working in government as lawmakers, elected officials, civil servants, intelligence/security officials or in national and international think tanks, multinational corporations (MNCs), United Nations (UN), national and international NGOs in various capacities. Other career opportunity includes journalism/ media/ public relations, legal practices, business and teaching. The students of BSS will have the flexibility to choose their major according to their career preferences. PSS has a strong track record of research in the areas of Politics, Governance, Security, Public Policy, Electoral Violence, Islamic Piety Movement, Citizenship, and Refugee Issues. Washington DC-based ICMA (International City/Country Management Association) NSU Student Chapter is affiliated with the PSS department. ICMA NSU has been Bangladeshโs 1st Asian Student Chapter working with local government management. ICMA NSU is highly committed to arranging competitions, conferences, boot camps and participate in joint research.
