DU’s IER Hosts ‘Elevate Talks’ Seminar Reflecting on Education and the July Uprising!

Dhaka, July 30, 2025 — The Institute of Education and Research (IER) at the University of Dhaka organized a thought-provoking seminar titled “Elevate Talks: The July Uprising in Bangladesh and the Trajectory of Education – Aspirations, Achievements, and the Road Ahead” on Wednesday at the Shaheed Dr. Shadat Ali Conference Room.

The event was held in observance of three significant milestones: the 104th founding anniversary of the University of Dhaka, the 65th anniversary of IER, and the commemoration of the historic July Uprising. It brought together educationists, researchers, and students to critically examine the intersection of political activism and educational reform in Bangladesh.

Professor Sumera Ahsan of IER delivered the opening address, underlining the July Uprising as a pivotal moment in the nation’s socio-political and educational landscape.

Moderated by Professor Dr. Mohammod Moninoor Roshid, the seminar featured a panel of distinguished IER faculty members who explored pressing issues such as education policy reform, gender equity, youth leadership, and institutional accountability.

In his keynote remarks, Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Salam discussed the unmet promises of the July Uprising, particularly regarding education reform. He criticized the current caretaker government’s failure to form an Education Reform Commission and noted the stagnation in educational budgeting and policy innovation. “Without increasing the budget or ensuring teachers' dignity, we cannot improve the quality of education,” he asserted.

Professor Dr. Md. Ahsan Habib addressed the evolving dynamics between teachers and students, particularly in a post-pandemic context. He urged for enhanced student engagement in curriculum design and academic policy. “Student voices must be included in curriculum development, and they must be empowered to speak up without political barriers,” he stated.

Focusing on inclusivity, Professor Dr. Md. Shahriar Haider emphasized the need for safer and more equitable academic environments, particularly for female, indigenous, and minority students. He recommended climate surveys and micro-courses to improve communication and interaction among students of diverse backgrounds.

Associate Professor Dr. Sayra Hossain reflected on IER’s legacy in shaping national education. She called for stronger university-industry collaboration and suggested organizing career-oriented seminars and symposia to guide students toward employability and leadership.

Adding a student perspective, Mahadi Hasan, General Secretary of the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association, encouraged student activism for quality education. “Students must act as a pressure group to demand reforms. Political engagement in universities must prioritize education,” he emphasized, urging DUCSU election candidates to champion student needs.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Abdullah Al Mamun, Lecturer at IER, who lauded the speakers and participants for their commitment to academic dialogue and social transformation.

Through “Elevate Talks,” IER reaffirmed its commitment to critically reexamining Bangladesh’s educational future by drawing on the democratic spirit of the July Uprising, advocating for a more just, inclusive, and responsive education system.
